a shrewd 9million maneuver

All names are fictitious and this is not a news item.

There was once upon a time, a damn rich malay politico businessman by the name Dato Malee. He has kaki at certain strategic point to deliver the damn thing. Poor little guys piously work through the proposal and endorse a big NO GO. The same proposal came down again to be handled by another section, still a NO GO. The price is simply bloody expensive! It came down for the third time, and this time it became a YES GO. Mr Eric son of Aron laughs out loud, looking at all the stupidity. Even Mr Gor and Mr Dol managed to put up sheepish smiles. But Badrul and Khairul went about their usual exchange, a bag at the back of the beautiful car. But Dato Malee attended Hari Raya celebration and deserve a sit beside the VVIP. If we care to scrutinize the bigger transaction, the scale of hyporicy double or triple.

In the end, a 9m deal is considered better than a 2m offer. But who cares...

How do we hide robbery.

All names are fictitious and this is not a news item.

Bribery induces Robbery. Bribery itself is as old as vice. It is about getting what we want, no matter what. Ask Dr Amin, because he knows everything. Honest guys will dutifully bid. Most guys will submit and ask someone to help. Readiness to help is a virtue preached by pious people, but to the layman helps has a price-tag. Money can come in envelopes, tucked in between newspaper. or money can come in big bags as Badrul and Khairul had demonstrated more than once. Money can exchange hands while playing and cruising in Bandung, or Wellington. Some people prefer cash, but some like to wash the dirty money clean, by placing it in secret accounts. That's how thing goes.

If they are real robin hood, people can tolerate.

the burden of ruling party, just a view.

names are fictitious and this is not a news item.

  1. It is not limited to Umno, or BN or Malaysia. It applies to any ruling party. At birth, rock solid is the best description of spirit and enthusiasm, but through time the zest dies off and replaced by something else. The new drive is the fighting spirit to keep ruling. It affects everyone involved, more so for the individuals who aspire to go higher. As soon as wisdom diminishes, greed comes in hungry and with such brutal force. How else would individuals retain power?
  2. A minister will take guys with suitable loyalty to look after him. Then funny guys of Khair and Hiz character come in to help. As if that's not enough, they keep enough pressure to make sure officers toe the line and even break the rules. A few has to be sidelined and blacklisted, invariably those are the straight, strict and honest guys. The whole ministerial globe turns into an Umno Greedy Division. Names has to be scrutinized. The definition of good officers changes Whoever that can affect maneuver to swing projects, requests and demands to their sides are excellent and fits the quorum of my guys. Guys has to be imported and planted to do the maneuver. Mr. Kamarruddin and Dr Amin hop like greedy Rambo. Even Khairul and Badrul hide behind their handsome faces when heavy bag changed hands. And they are bringing more in, with similar green belly.
  3. They are now playing dirty right in front of others. And these people are voters who may swing support and push anger into ballot boxes all over the country. Anybody cares about creating wealth? No, but there is a fine line separating Umno's cause and personal greed in pursuit of political glamor and personal wealth. They disrupt traditions and structure. They create dissent and push the widening gap further. The individuals will go home and talk to their family. Over weekends they talk among friends. After a while the whole family and friends will be sharing anger and dissent. This is the silent vote swing which nobody can stop.
  4. How would we know they care about Umno, the malays and the nation. We are heading towards a damning vanishing point, where all things will collide with a big bang... poor Umno in dirty hands. Poor voters are blinded by smiles. But there must be a way. It is slow but brutal, waking up the old sleepy tiger, the ruling party.

Mungkin Muhyiddin betul.

Mereka berjaya dengan kerjasama Dennis, son of Eric.

Names are fictitious, as a friend keeps saying, what's in a name?

Umno, A broken Bracelet

Lets not talk about gelang patah in its literal sense and spend valuable time scrutinizing it.
A broken bracelet.
A pride shattered.
A broken hope.

Gelang patah had a story about going for broke two years ago. Another brick in the wall did a run through of the whole fiasco (Tembelang KJ dan Reezal pecah di Gelang Patah; Akarumbi Tidak Terima KJ).

I thought item 17 worth a repeat.

In case we have forgotten, a news clip will help to rekindle what has flared two years ago.

NST Online 2008/10/12 Delegates claim nomination was rigged

JOHOR BARU: Tempers flared at the Gelang Patah Umno Youth meeting at a hotel here yesterday following the nomination of Deputy Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for the national Youth wing chief's post.

Most of the 146 delegates at the meeting, who were rooting for Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, voiced their dissatisfaction over the outcome, claiming that there was foul play during the vote-counting process.

They claimed that 70 per cent of the delegates had nominated Dr Khir and it was baffling to see Khairy's name cropping up at the end of the meeting at 5.30pm.

But who is Khairi Malek?

Probably there is a need to go slow as we move along this political scrutiny to pick up pieces, and recognise faces. Lets ride on a serial , fixing political bracelet down south.

Lewis Hamilton condemns 'dangerous' Singapore grand prix circuit

• Slow driving, uneven surface creates problems for the drivers
• 'It's just ridiculous' McLaren driver Hamilton complains

Lewis Hamilton tonight described the Marina Bay street track as "dangerous" after a combination of the slow driving surface and its unevenness created problems for the drivers.

Race organisers have modified the course by ironing out some of the bumps but Hamilton, who came a disappointing fifth in tonight's second practice session, said: "I think they've made it worse. The chicane is the worst corner I have ever driven in Formula One. It's just ridiculous. Last year it was small but now it's even more dangerous. We saw one other car take off [Adrian Sutil's Force India, which suffered damage to its front suspension].

"You approach that corner at 160-170mph and then you brake down. If something goes wrong, somebody's brakes fail and you hit one of those kerbs then you are going to see a nasty accident."

Jenson Button, who trailed only the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel in the second session, said: "It doesn't dry here very quickly and there's a lot of water coming up through the circuit. It's pretty tricky out there. Hopefully we won't have any more rain this weekend because those conditions aren't the nicest to drive in."

Webber had been fastest in the earlier session, edging out Michael Schumacher. In the later session it was the turn of Vettel to dominate.

Button, who trails the championship leader, Webber, by 22 points, said he prefers it when he is not leading the field, as he was last year. The world champion said: "There's pressure on the guys at the front. Most of the pressure is on Mark. I think he's pretty good at handling it. For us guys further back ... I've been in both positions now and for me being in this position is more exciting. Obviously you have less of a chance of winning the title. You have to be more aggressive."

But Button says he cannot afford another failure to finish, which he suffered in Spa two races ago after a mistake by Vettel. Button added: "If you have a DNF ["Did not finish" in the classification] it's very difficult to fight for the title. But if you're not aggressive you're never going to fight for the title. I've got to take a chance and go for it, and if you're more aggressive it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to have a DNF. I'm 22 points behind. It's got to be controlled aggression."

After building up a good lead Button almost squandered his advantage last season. "We [Button's then Brawn team] were too conservative, which was our biggest problem. We knew we didn't have the quickest car but we knew we had to get points. I didn't have to beat the other guys but I had to finish close to them. You have to be very careful changing your views and the way you go racing."

Christian Klien will compete in his first grand prix for four years this weekend after stepping in for Hispania Racing's Sakon Yamamoto. The Japanese driver has food poisoning.

Bad taste publicity stunt from Shamsul Iskandar PKR

Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Youth chief, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin today spoke out against the threat made to him by Selangor police.

The 36-year-old Syariah lawyer said his previous statement on the murder case of cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya, was merely questions, not allegations to the police.

"Firstly, I was only questioning whether there were any abuse of power within Banting police as they had failed to act on the missing person reports involving the lawyer suspects.

"None of the cases were taken seriously until Sosilawati's case were brought to public attention by the media," he said. ( PKR Youth chief hits back at police) malay mail 23 sep 2010

Five UM students freed of arson attempt charge

KUALA LUMPUR: Five Universiti Malaya (UM) students, who were accused of trying to start a fire at the Islamic Studies Academy faculty hall, were acquitted and discharged by a Sessions Court here Friday.

The students were also freed of two other charges - committing criminal trespass at the same place and committing mischief by splashing petrol on the carpet and scribbling on the wall of the same main hall.

Mohamad Aizat Roslan, 21, Mohd Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin, 22, Muhamad Saufi Jelani, 21, Mohamad Izzuddin Hilmi, 21, and Muhammad Syahrul Deen Ahmad Rosli, 21, were all smiles when the verdict was delivered at the court complex here.

Sessions Court judge Rozana Ali Yusoff acquitted the five accused as the prosecution failed to prove crucial elements in the case at the end of the prosecution stage.

For the criminal trespass charge, Rozana said the prosecution failed to prove that the five accused had a common intention to commit the offence.

"Nobody gave evidence that the five accused were at the scene," she said, before a packed court room.

The judge added that the prosecution also could not identify the flammable materials used during the alleged attempt to start a fire and had relied on circumstantial evidence.

When met by reporters, Mohd Shazni Munir, who is the chairman of Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), said he was thankful to Allah and the court for delivering a fair ruling.

On Dec 8 last year, Mohamad Aizat, Mohd Shazni Munir and Muhamad Saufi were charged with trying to commit mischief by fire, knowing it could cause destruction to the main hall of the faculty, at 4am on June 24.

The trio faced a second charge of committing criminal trespass at the same place and time. They were also accused of committing mischief by splashing petrol on the carpet and scribbling on the wall of the same main hall that day.

Mohamad Izzuddin and Muhammad Syahrul Deen claimed trial to the same charges on June 30 last year.

Tangan Muhyiddin terikat

Titanic sunk by steering mistake, author says

The Titanic hit an iceberg in 1912 because of a basic steering error, and only sank as fast as it did because an official persuaded the captain to continue sailing, an author said in an interview published on Wednesday.

Louise Patten, a writer and granddaughter of Titanic second officer Charles Lightoller, said the truth about what happened nearly 100 years ago had been hidden for fear of tarnishing the reputation of her grandfather, who later became a war hero.

Lightoller, the most senior officer to have survived the disaster, covered up the error in two inquiries on both sides of the Atlantic because he was worried it would bankrupt the ill-fated liner's owners and put his colleagues out of a job.

"They could easily have avoided the iceberg if it wasn't for the blunder," Patten told the Daily Telegraph.

AP/Premier Exhibitions, Inc.-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution "Instead of steering Titanic safely round to the left of the iceberg, once it had been spotted dead ahead, the steersman, Robert Hitchins, had panicked and turned it the wrong way."

Patten, who made the revelations to coincide with the publication of her new novel "Good as Gold" into which her account of events are woven, said that the conversion from sail ships to steam meant there were two different steering systems.

Crucially, one system meant turning the wheel one way and the other in completely the opposite direction.

Once the mistake had been made, Patten added, "they only had four minutes to change course and by the time (first officer William) Murdoch spotted Hitchins' mistake and then tried to rectify it, it was too late."

Patten's grandfather was not on watch at the time of the collision, but he was present at a final meeting of the ship's officers before the Titanic went down.

There he heard not only about the fatal mistake but also the fact that J. Bruce Ismay, chairman of Titanic's owner the White Star Line persuaded the captain to continue sailing, sinking the ship hours faster than would otherwise have happened.

"If Titanic had stood still, she would have survived at least until the rescue ship came and no one need have died," Patten said.

The RMS Titanic was the world's biggest passenger liner when it left Southampton, England, for New York on its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. Four days into the trip, the ship hit an iceberg and sank, taking more than 1,500 passengers with it.

Umno jangan lihat Perkasa saperti ‘hantu jembalang’

“Jika ia kenyataan peribadi, adakah ia bermakna Tengku Adnan mengatasi kedudukan Majlis Tertinggi Umno,” kata Ibrahim Ali.

Tuntutan Siqiu suatu masa dulu

  • Gubalkan Akta Perhubungan Kaum untuk mencegah diskriminasi perkauman, rasialisme dan rasisme;

  • Garisan sempadan pilihanraya mestilah berasaskan prinsip ¡®satu orang satu undi¡¯ .
  • Memulihkan pilihan kerajaan tempatan
  • Senator haruslah dipilih oleh rakyat

3. Mempertahankan Hak Asasi Manusia dan Menegakkan Keadilan

Memperteguhkan hak asasi manusia, keadilan, keamanan dan kebebasan negara kita, agar
melindungi hak-hak politik, sosial, kebudayaan dan ekonomi seluruh rakyat Malaysia:

  • Ratifikasikan dan menandatangani semua konvensyen bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu dan
    kovenan-kovenan antarabangsa
  • Gubalkan Akta Kebebasan Informasi

4. Membasmi Amalan Rasuah

  • Batalkan rancangan pengkorporatan perkhidmatan kesihatan supaya membolehkan rakyat
  • Kaji semula perkhidmatan pembetungan supaya mengurangkan beban para pengguna.

kemampuan keluarga pelajar (means-tested sliding scale) tanpa mengira kaum.
  • Iktirafkan Sijil Peperiksaan Bersama Sekolah Menengah Persendirian cina.

    badan-badan kebudayaan rasmi.
  • Galakkan pertukaran kebudayaan antarabangsa.

    penduduk.

    mampu memiliki rumah sendiri.

12. Lindungi Hak Asasi Wanita

  • Hapuskan peraturan mengenakan pembaruan tahunan permit menerbit (KDN)
  • Galakan penubuhan media penyiaran swasta.

penyalahgunaan kuasa an kekerasan polis.

BANTING MURDER: Friend of cosmetics queen found dead

Just an update on the 2010 gruesome Banting murder:

GEORGE TOWN: A close friend of cosmetics queen Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya, who is suspected to have been murdered along with three others recently, was found dead in her bedroom in Taman Pauh Jaya, Bukit Mertajam, yesterday.

Sarina Jaafar, 45, the founder of Aveer cosmetics, was found about 8.30am by a relative, who had rushed to her house after receiving a call from her. At the time of the incident, Sarina was alone at home.

It was learnt that prior to the incident, Sarina, who was believed to be under stress, had called her relative to tell her that she was going to hang herself.

As soon as her relative arrived at her home with one of her children, she found Sarina already dead, hanging from the ceiling. She immediately took the body down.

Seberang Prai Tengah district deputy police chief Superintendent Mohan Singh said they received a call from a woman informing them about the incident.

When police arrived at her house, Sarina's body had already been taken down. Her remains were sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for post-mortem.

Sarina, who has four children, aged between 16 and 24 from her first marriage, was a successful entrepreneur. She married a second time five years ago.

Meanwhile, Sarina's son Mohd Azrul Affendi Zakaria, 24, who rushed home from Kuala Lumpur, said he was informed of his mother's death by his younger sister.

Azrul, who believed his mother could have been under stress, said she told him recently that she had been hearing voices calling out to her from her father's grave.

"My mother was a loving person and never failed to look after our well-being. I last met her on Friday and advised her to be careful with her business after the recent murders.

"The murder of (Datuk) Sosilawati affected my mother as both were close friends and had known each another for a long time as they were in the same business line."

Azrul, who will be getting married in January, said instead of his wedding dinner, he now has to hold a kenduri for his mother.

Sarina was buried at the Bukit Minyak Muslim cemetery yesterday.

politics and students

Oh the minister had spoken. Let students concentrate on their studies and excel. Politics may just disturb the route to success. He may not know the real truth, even at the present moment, students are highly political, so must so that there is a real big shift in voting preferences among the young voters.

The Star has reported this on the 10th of September 2010 “The world has so many problems. We want the universities to provide the right role for studies, We do not want political parties to come in,” Khaled said when asked if the AUKU Act would be amended to allow university students to participate in politics.

Oh well, we are too busy to be looking extremely good, that voting trend is never our concern. After all the effort, of hefty study loans, and off the cuff announcement of repayment exemption for first class, we are too indifferent to read in between lines and colours. The truth may linger around this; Political awareness among students is not all about bringing political parties to the campus. There is a real need to develop political awareness, the ability to observe and weigh situation.

On the hindsight, a little conclusion can be made, that we don't have the meat to face the real challenge. All the looking good propaganda stunt left us so helpless, that a little hot spot is too much for a sweet sun bathing at a sandy beach down south. A friend is observing a different tone taking place, first by being critical to perkasa, and now by showing indifferent attitude towards freedom in campus. I am sure, there will be more to come.

Sosilawati, Banting Murder.

Just an update on the gruesome Banting murder:

Two more nabbed over missing Indian businessman

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 18, 2010) : Police have made further progress in multiple murder probe involving two lawyers, with the arrest of two more suspects.

The suspects who are allegedly linked to the two lawyers arrested over the killing of the cosmetic company millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and her three associates on Aug 3, were picked up to assist in the probe of another case involving missing Indian businessman A.Muthuraja.

Selangor police chief DCP Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said police arrested a 34-year-old man in Taman Wilayah, Selayang late yesterday evening.

In a follow up operation just after midnight today, a second suspect, aged 21, was arrested at Kampung Laksamana, Batu Caves.

He said investigators believe both men can shed light into the case of the missing Indian businessman.

Muthuraja who had come to Malaysia to meet the lawyers in January, had never been seen again.
His wife, S Usharani lodged a police report on Sept 8 after months of trying to locate her husband.
The latest arrests brings the total number of those detained to 10 suspects.

It is learnt that more arrests are expected to follow in the coming days.

The disappearance of Sosilawati, her lawyer Ahmad Kamil Abdul Karim, 32, bank officer Noorhisham Mohammad, 38, and driver Kamaruddin Shamsuddin, 44 on Aug 30 uncovered probably the country's most gruesome case of mass homicide last week.

A 41-year-old lawyer who claimed to be a Datuk, and is believed to be the mastermind behind the killings, and his brother who is also a lawyer, are the main suspects.

Police discovered the four victims were lured to the lawyer's farm near Taman Gadong, Morib and clubbed to death before their bodies were burnt and the ashes later thrown into a nearby river.

Police believe they have built a strong case against the suspects and expect to charge them for the murders next week.

Kuala Lumpur CID chief SAC Datuk Ku Chin Wah said remand orders for eight suspects arrested last week, have been extended a further week until Sept 25

The Story of Dol and Gor

There is another damning story about true friendship of Dol and Gor and others within the circle. Forget it, we are not going to expose the episode of 50K changing hands while playing ski (not ski?) over in Bandung and while hiking up the mighty mountain over the other part of the country. Those are little things that will warm anybody's blanket and set the dream far and high. Come to a point, the whole thing is so addicting. Yes, we may be right about them not robbing anybody's purse. The are not hinting about declining the tactful offer either. We then pity the little guys in blue taking RM20 over traffic offense and duly exposed like dirty culprits.

Dol is a true character, so charming and clever. Gor is a lazy bump. As long as their addictions go on, Gor will never fall because Dol is always there for a hand. The other day, Gor is about to fall in disgrace, Dol came in to help and put him even higher.

Kok had been helping so far, but with Gor around, the whole team is complete to grab and bulldoze anything.

Little guys will shy away, and so are the votes. But the minister keep talking to local folks holding his colar, like a real humble, honest and shy person. He got so much to hide, not only within his batik shirt but the whole dirty politic that distract people from getting closer. He can never depend on Man Burger, Pin Cendul, and Tan Kayu, because these people are just naive and crazy. The real fear is within the hands of the general public that has been putting up watchful eyes. Badrul and Khairul were not even aware that their cunning transactions was recorded.

They don't care about these people, the masses. For Umno to live with the right spirit and vision better and sincere leaders will soon come forward and replace.

Oh, Mr Minister.

KUALA LANGAT: The Sungai Panchau riverbed in Banting – where ash and remains of murdered cosmetics millionaire Datuk Sosilawati Lawiya and three others were dumped – could well turn out to be a gruesome watery grave after police found more than 300 human bone fragments.

According to an expert who has been handling cremations for 20 years, that amount of bone fragments could easily be the remains of some 20 people.

This ghastly discovery has sparked a fresh round of speculation that more people could have been killed, burnt and dumped into the river, located about 5km from the farm where the quadruple murder took place.

Other developments are:

> THE prime suspect is believed to be linked to the brutal murder of a mechanic’s wife who was slashed to death in front of her house in Banting last year;

> THE lawyer has also been linked to seven controversial land deals involving a total of RM7.1mil;

> POLICE have been hailed for their efficiency in solving the murders; and

> THE wife of missing Indian millionaire A. Muthuraja claims that only Rs1,000 (RM67) is left in Muthuraja’s accounts after he came to Banting to meet the two lawyer brothers.

Mr Badrul and Mr Khairul

Remember the day when the sun was still shining? That was the day when we play games and stick with the rule to the end. But remember the day, when Mr Badrul and Mr Khairul were at the back of the car with hood opened and a bag of 200K changed hand. There was a memory lapse on both party about right and wrong.

Lets not probe further who Badrul and Khairul are, because names are just tags like those hanging on the neck of a dog.

Oh, Mr Minister.

There was a day when a top officer of a ministry had to caution the group to toe the line (or to obey the directives?). He said " you know our minister...." The rest just kept quiet. But then how do we translate that little remark into the bigger political landscape?

That was not the first time it seems. There were series of such instances, even in the previous ministry that the said minister had been holding office. Good camouflage in form of excellent publicity stunt managed to hide ill-advised agenda. Of course, as anyone would expect, business people from his state paraded around like vultures. Coffer is cleaned and structure in disarray.

Those who are keen on this monetary maneuver for a few dollars more, are smiling like dogs. Those who wish to hold on to the last thread of integrity eyed with suspicion and shun away. That would probably be the reason why more voters are shying away from BN and UMNO. Some leaders are too greedy and dirty, and just to make them look clean, they pay millions on publicity stunt to paint rosy pictures.

Lets not give names. There is no need. Tok Pa from Jeli defines a standard beyond reach by most. Clean UMNO politician is a dying breed. And if voters vote for oppositions, they themselves (the politicians) are to be blamed, those damned ill-advised and greedy ministers.

Oh, Mr Minister. You really have to change.

The True Cost Of The Iraq War

Huffingtonpost : Writing in these pages in early 2008, we put the total cost to the United States of the Iraq war at $3 trillion. This price tag dwarfed previous estimates, including the Bush administration's 2003 projections of a $50 billion to $60 billion war.

But today, as the United States ends combat in Iraq, it appears that our $3 trillion estimate (which accounted for both government expenses and the war's broader impact on the U.S. economy) was, if anything, too low. For example, the cost of diagnosing, treating and compensating disabled veterans has proved higher than we expected.
Moreover, two years on, it has become clear to us that our estimate did not capture what may have been the conflict's most sobering expenses: those in the category of "might have beens," or what economists call opportunity costs. For instance, many have wondered aloud whether, absent the Iraq invasion, we would still be stuck in Afghanistan.

And this is not the only "what if" worth contemplating. We might also ask: If not for the war in Iraq, would oil prices have risen so rapidly? Would the federal debt be so high? Would the economic crisis have been so severe?
The answer to all four of these questions is probably no. The central lesson of economics is that resources -- including both money and attention -- are scarce. What was devoted to one theater, Iraq, was not available elsewhere.
Afghanistan

The Iraq invasion diverted our attention from the Afghan war, now entering its 10th year. While "success" in Afghanistan might always have been elusive, we would probably have been able to assert more control over the Taliban, and suffered fewer casualties, if we had not been sidetracked. In 2003 -- the year we invaded Iraq -- the United States cut spending in Afghanistan to $14.7 billion (down from more than $20 billion in 2002), while we poured $53 billion into Iraq. In 2004, 2005 and 2006, we spent at least four times as much money in Iraq as in Afghanistan.

It is hard to believe that we would be embroiled in a bloody conflict in Afghanistan today if we had devoted the resources there that we instead deployed in Iraq. A troop surge in 2003 -- before the warlords and the Taliban reestablished control -- would have been much more effective than a surge in 2010.

Oil

When the United States went to war in Iraq, the price of oil was less than $25 a barrel, and futures markets expected it to remain around that level. With the war, prices started to soar, reaching $140 a barrel by 2008. We believe that the war and its impact on the Middle East, the largest supplier of oil in the world, were major factors. Not only was Iraqi production interrupted, but the instability the war brought to the Middle East dampened investment in the region.
In calculating our $3 trillion estimate two years ago, we blamed the war for a $5-per-barrel oil price increase. We now believe that a more realistic (if still conservative) estimate of the war's impact on prices works out to at least $10 per barrel. That would add at least $250 billion in direct costs to our original assessment of the war's price tag. But the cost of this increase doesn't stop there: Higher oil prices had a devastating effect on the economy.
Federal debt

There is no question that the Iraq war added substantially to the federal debt. This was the first time in American history that the government cut taxes as it went to war. The result: a war completely funded by borrowing. U.S. debt soared from $6.4 trillion in March 2003 to $10 trillion in 2008 (before the financial crisis); at least a quarter of that increase is directly attributable to the war. And that doesn't include future health care and disability payments for veterans, which will add another half-trillion dollars to the debt.
As a result of two costly wars funded by debt, our fiscal house was in dismal shape even before the financial crisis -- and those fiscal woes compounded the downturn.
The financial crisis

The global financial crisis was due, at least in part, to the war. Higher oil prices meant that money spent buying oil abroad was money not being spent at home. Meanwhile, war spending provided less of an economic boost than other forms of spending would have. Paying foreign contractors working in Iraq was neither an effective short-term stimulus (not compared with spending on education, infrastructure or technology) nor a basis for long-term growth.
Instead, loose monetary policy and lax regulations kept the economy going -- right up until the housing bubble burst, bringing on the economic freefall.
Saying what might have been is always difficult, especially with something as complex as the global financial crisis, which had many contributing factors. Perhaps the crisis would have happened in any case. But almost surely, with more spending at home, and without the need for such low interest rates and such soft regulation to keep the economy going in its absence, the bubble would have been smaller, and the consequences of its breaking therefore less severe. To put it more bluntly: The war contributed indirectly to disastrous monetary policy and regulations.

The Iraq war didn't just contribute to the severity of the financial crisis, though; it also kept us from responding to it effectively. Increased indebtedness meant that the government had far less room to maneuver than it otherwise would have had. More specifically, worries about the (war-inflated) debt and deficit constrained the size of the stimulus, and they continue to hamper our ability to respond to the recession. With the unemployment rate remaining stubbornly high, the country needs a second stimulus. But mounting government debt means support for this is low. The result is that the recession will be longer, output lower, unemployment higher and deficits larger than they would have been absent the war.

* * *
Reimagining history is a perilous exercise. Nonetheless, it seems clear that without this war, not only would America's standing in the world be higher, our economy would be stronger. The question today is: Can we learn from this costly mistake?
