Zaid, keluar dari rumpun Melayu, kata Shahidan kassim

KANGAR, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- Perlis Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has slammed former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim over his remarks on "ketuanan Melayu" (Malay supremacy) which Shahidan regards as extreme.

"Zaid should repent. Otherwise, he should get out of the 'rumpun Melayu' (Malay grouping)," said the former Perlis Menteri Besar, here today.

Shahidan, who is also Arau Umno division chief, said Zaid "is a Malay and should be behaving like a Malay".

"He should have the Malay spirit and not question 'ketuanan Melayu' openly," Shahidan said when met at the closing of the Perlis Open Cycling Championship 2008 and the Women's Cycling Championship for the President's Cup, here.

He said if Zaid continued to question the Malay supremacy concept, then he should no longer be a Malay because as a Malay he should be defending the Malays and not running them down.

Shahidan, who is also an Umno Supreme Council member, wants Zahid to apologise for his remarks.

Zaid had recently said that the "ketuanan Melayu" concept was a failure and detriment to the Malay race, and that it had caused wastage to resources, energy and time needed to address the real issues in the country.

Shahidan pulls out of veep race

Former Perlis menteri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim is withdrawing his offer to contest the Umno vice-presidency and will instead concentrate on contesting a Supreme Council (MP) seat.

The Perlis Umno Liaison chairman said latest developments showed there were many candidates vying for the vice-presidency and felt that he should make way for the best candidates including those representing the northern states.

“Although I believe many divisions will continue to nominate me, I will concentrate on the MT seat,” he said today.

He thanked the divisions that had nominated him to contest the post of Umno vice-president.

Shahidan said that so far, the Perlis Umno Liaison Body had only proposed his name to represent Perlis in the contest for the MT seat.
Shahidan has so far received nine nominations to contest the MT seat and needs only one more to meet the quota of 10 nominations to qualify for the contest. — BERNAMA

Ruler: Regard events as lesson

ARAU: After keeping his silence since polling day, the Raja of Perlis yesterday spoke frankly about the recent impasse over the state leadership.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail said the events leading to the appointment of the Perlis menteri besar should be regarded as a lesson for future events.

"Now, that matter has become history. We cannot change the past. But I hope in future, every government officer would hold closely and respect the constitution.

"If not, the country and state would be in chaos," he said after witnessing the swearing-in of seven state executive council members in Istana Arau.

He was speaking off the cuff despite having a prepared text with him during the 11.30am ceremony.
He said the events which led to the appointment of Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu were out of the ordinary.

"In these past few days, there was an unusual event which occurred in Perlis.

"It was a change in which the elected representatives and assemblymen did not give a vote of confidence for the previous menteri besar.

"This matter had confused the laymen. But for those who knew and understood the law, it was a simple matter."

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said there were parties who took advantage of the supposed confusion over the matter.

"However, there were some who had used certain parties, including the newspapers, for their own benefit."

He said the appointment of Md Isa was done according to Perlis' constitution, and was based on the constitutional monarchy principle.

Md Isa was appointed on Monday.

The ceremony was also witnessed by the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, former state secretary Datuk Ismail Othman and state legal adviser Abdul Rasid Sudin.

The Raja of Perlis thanked former menteri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim and his previous exco members for leading the state government during the past four years.

He advised the new executive councillors and assemblymen to fulfil their obligations as elected representatives of the people. On development, he urged the new state leadership to set up a think-tank for education and solve the people's problems.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin would also seek help from Universiti Sains Malaysia, of which he is the chancellor, to develop the think-tank.

Perlis BN picks smoke-free candidates

KANGAR: Only healthy non-smokers are on the list of potential Barisan Nasional candidates for Perlis, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim.

He said Home Affairs minister Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad and Environmental and Natural Resources minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid were in the list as both were non-smokers.

KANGAR: Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad has expressed his intention "to contest anywhere, whether in a parliamentary or state seat".
He also made it clear that only Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman, could decide on who should contest in the general election. Radzi was reacting to news that he had been dropped by the Kangar Umno division to defend the parliamentary seat. Names of candidates were submitted to the party president by Dec 31.

KANGAR: Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid claims that his image and dignity has been affected following claims that he did not receive support from his Padang Besar Umno division.

He was reacting to a comment by Perlis Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who said that both Azmi and Home Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Radzi Sheikh Ahmad did not receive any nomination from their respective Umno divisions to contest as election candidates.

NOTA: On smoking, lips will tell all. Red lips belongs to non smokers. Well, they still have a week left to prove they never touch ciggarettes. Anyway Radzi is of darker complexion, so naturally his lips are darker. That cannot be used as a proof of smoking activities.... hmmm. Holy Smoke!!
