WAN FARID WITH MALAYSIAKINI: on personal attacks.

A typical mud slinging game played by many. Political stage is smeared with personal attacks for a long time. With Malaysiakini, Lets share what Wan Farid has to say as a response to numerous personal attacks on him.

Wan Farid

the point of responding
to personal attacks

adib Zalkapli

Tired of the unrelenting personal attacks against him, Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate in the crucial Kuala Terengganu by-election Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh today vowed to stop entertaining the viciousness.

“If I want to listen to everything people say, I will lose focus, if I want to respond to all these words, I won’t be able to do anything else,” said Wan Farid at a press conference here today.

He added that it was inaccurate to say that the personal attacks against him came only from Umno, his own party.

“The personal attacks against me were made on Pas’s stage, and it was on record. To say that they come from within the party is baseless,” said the former deputy minister.

Since filing his nomination on Jan 6, the former political secretary to Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi has been subjected to various personal attacks.

Wan Farid has been dogged by accusations of being elitist and that he is unable to speak the local dialect, but he has denied all the criticisms, while national leaders including the Prime Minister and Umno vice president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin have been forced to defend the character of the former senator.

On the progress made by BN’s campaign, Wan Farid said local issues would be the determining factor on Jan 17.

Wan Farid is running against Pas’s Abdul Wahid Endut and independent Azharudin Adam.

On the suggestion by a pro-monarchy group, Mampat for him to debate Abdul Wahid on the oil royalty issue, Wan Farid said it was not necessary.

“If the state government has not received the money and if the policy has not changed,” Wan Farid said, then he might be willing to debate.

The Terengganu state government recently received RM408.6 million from the federal government as part of the oil royalty payment.

In 1999 when Pas took over the state, the federal government stopped paying the oil royalty directly and took over the management of the funds by calling it goodwill money. [Wan Farid does not see the point of responding to personal attacks The Malaysian Insider]

A BYE IN MALAYSIAKINI: KT is for Wan Farid and Umno.

It is called a bye when one advances to the next round without playing an opponent. Malaysiakini said KT a do or die battle for Umno and Najib. I will nonchalantly regard the next by election as a bye. We can construe it as "given" [another golf term] or a bye as someone is very melancholic about leaving.

2. When was our last by election? Late August 2008 was a bloodshed between brothers. Anwar was having a fun time, drawing dagger and dancing with brothers he knew for decades. They were together once upon a time, planning things and executing strategies together. It was long phase in Umno that witness memali incident, Musa's departure to London, a judicial reform when a CJ was sacked by peers, a royal showdown and new Umno. Everything seemed to roll along the industrial dual track platform persuading proton to be one of the many houseold items.

3. Those were years when Malaysian yelled "Malaysia Boleh!". Then slowly everybody become politically conscious. The year 2008 saw a funny kind of political awareness when a young videographer was sent to the parliament. For a minute, I thought folks were doing the right thing, giving the young guy credit for his endeavour, videotaping a guy talking fully dressed!

4. The whole scenario was centred on an important element in life called lobbying. Everyone will do abit of lobbying sometimes along the way. Anwar went wild lobbying MPs to jump ship. Kids cycled all the way to the parliament to lobby for a cause. Older guys waited at the parliament lobby to receive the memo, a lobby.

5. Permatang Pauh saw a deliberate by election because someone wish to be full time housewife and a husband wish to get out of self-imposed retirement. So, at the end thousands went to polling booth to state their stand. Issues were thrown like a ringgit a piece. Copters, dynamites, dead body were flung aimlessly. Very sad, the very same person who claimed to be victimised politically during the heyday of economic downturn, say little to another victim of a sodomy case.

6. The Jews like to say this "everything is fine in chaos". But over here, there are believers of chaotic endeavor. Just sharing with malaysiakini readers, chaos can infact be created! Like a hero that has to kill thousands to grab the title "the great", a politician will do the same, creating chaos to simulate a heroic return!

7. I dont see many issues in hand as far as Terengganu is concerned. A term with Hadi years ago, saw little of him as a statesman material. He took things for granted, hugging the ruler as if there was no protocol at all. The moment he poked fun at another political friend as "Obat habis tempuh" [he said obat not ubat], viewers like me started counting the days left.

8. Wan Farid is a steady guy. He made it clear that he has no time for personal attacks. To him it boils down to party and its political agenda. It is nice of him to say that. When vultures are flying low over Sarawak, I find it hard to imagine if Anwar will land in Kuala Terengganu to state his stand on Hudud. Anwar is good at making promises but when things start boiling, nobody is sure anymore.

9. It is not about wan farid coming out as winner, but it is about a junction when Anwar could simply be left out cold or allowed to fly low over sibu and bintulu for a peep.

Good Luck Farid, and be more tactful with local folks. See you on the eve of 17th january 2009.

Wan Ahmad Farid given task of enlightening voters

KUALA LUMPUR, TUES:

Barisan Nasional will focus on efforts to reduce spoilt votes, which totalled 1,050 in the March general election, in its campaign for the coming Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election.

Towards this end, its candidate, Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Ismail, would be going from house to house to enlighten voters in the constituency on the importance of their votes.

“We will identify reasons for the spoilt votes, whether it is because of protest because voters are not happy with the candidates or that they do not know to do it correctly,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby after taking his oath as a senator for a second term today.

Wan Ahmad Farid, 46, who is Deputy Home Minister and also Kuala Terengganu Umno division chief, said he would refrain from making personal attacks against his opponents in the contest.

The Kuala Terengganu by-election, which nomination is on Jan 6, will be held following the death of its Member of Parliament Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov 28.
Razali won the seat in the March general election after defeating PAS’ Mohamad Sabu (PAS) and an independent candidate, Maimun Yusuf, with a majority of 628 votes.

Wan Ahmad Farid denies being an elitist

The Kuala Terengganu by-election is still some time away but the BN candidate, Senator Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, has already found himself having to deal with the oft-repeated complaint that he is elitist and not a man of the people.

"If I am elitist, how is it I got to the position I hold in Umno. I have been in Umno since 1995, I was a Pemuda chief in Kuala Terengganu.

“How could I have come this far if I had been elitist," said the Terengganu Umno division chief.

Wan Ahmad Farid, who is the Deputy Home Minister, was speaking to reporters at the parliament lobby today.

He said the people who labelled him an elitist obviously had no idea about the work he had been doing on the ground.

WITH MALAYSIAKINI: Joceline on Wan Farid last year.

So for a month, Wan Ahmad Farid will be the central figure in Malaysian politics. Kuala Terengganu by election is going to be very close and tight judging by the small margin of 628 votes won by the late Razali in April this year . Hafiz Yatim in Malaysiakini warned about strategies to be taken by PAS as they zoom into Farid's weaknesses.

  • from malaysiakini
  • Some issues PAS intends to pick on Hafiz Yatim | Dec 22, 08 4:04pm
  • PAS is quick to zoom into Umno candidate Wan Ahmad Farid’s soft spots, one of which is his close ties with the outgoing prime minister.

2. I remembered what Joceline wrote last year on
Time for damage control. What she wrote then is still relevant as far as tussle between PAS and UMNO goes .

beritadarigunung

INSIGHT: BY Joceline Tan

The opposition party ceramah in Terengganu that went seriously wrong will have political implications for both PAS and Umno even as they blame each other and the police.

But by mid-week, he had lost his patience and grown quite irritated with the repeated accusations.

“How did I get dragged into this? I had nothing to do with it,” he said.

The accusation emanated from no less than one of PAS' most influential figures, Datuk Mustafa Ali who is also the party's Terengganu chief. Mustafa had openly alleged that Wan Farid was one of those behind last Saturday's trouble.

Calm before the storm: Idris (second from left) probably had no idea of the storm ahead when he joined a reef clean-up in the calm blue waters off Terengganu but he will have to do some shrewd damage control in the weeks ahead.

It is not difficult to see why PAS politicians are so keen to link Wan Farid to last Saturday's fracas.

The British-trained lawyer is a rising star in Terengganu and also the political secretary to Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in his Internal Security Minister portfolio.

PAS politicians claimed that Wan Farid had met police personnel earlier on the day of the ceramah.

Mustafa: Alleged that Umno played a role in last week's clash.

He did, actually, but as the VIP guest at the Police Open Day in the police residential complex at 11am in Ladang about 5km away. He had made a short speech at the function and given away prizes for the futsal game and cooking contest.

“I was there for about an hour and about 400 people saw me there. Then I left for another appointment. For them to implicate me shows how desperate they are to shift the blame,” said Wan Farid.

There has been no shortage of explanations and theories over what happened in Batu Buruk and the blame game is still going on.

This was no ordinary clash because live bullets were used on an unarmed crowd and two men were shot.

The opposition parties, led by PAS, blamed the police for the clash and accused Umno of allegedly masterminding it.

Umno on its part has painted the opposition parties, especially PAS and their supporters, as unruly, desperate for a way out of the quagmire and disrespectful of the law.

A string of police reports have been lodged by both sides and two of those injured are still hospitalised.

Parliamentarians have traded accusations over it at the current session of Parliament and the human rights body Suhakam has agreed to a fact-finding mission.

Shabery: Slammed PAS for breaking law and burning national flag.

People in Kuala Terengganu are still shocked and have not been able to stop talking about it.

Few anticipated trouble even though the organisers had decided to go ahead without a police permit.

Apparently, the authorities have not allowed political gatherings in Batu Buruk for some time now.

The last ceramah there, which featured Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, took place several months ago. That ceramah also did not have a permit but a compromise was struck and it ended at 11pm instead of the usual midnight.

The authorities say they want to keep political activity away from the area which is a tourist spot with beach hotels and a stunning vista of the South China Sea. It is also an elite residential address that includes the palace of the King's mother, home of the High Court judge as well as top civil servants.

Wan Farid: PAS is desperate to shift the blame for their mistake.

The ceramah was to launch the Terengganu chapter of Bersih, an electoral reform coalition of political parties and NGOs.

The police suggested that it be held in Rusila, the stronghold of PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang. But the PAS side, which applied for the permit, was unwilling because non-PAS supporters would not go to Rusila and they wanted to attract a mixed crowd.

Some claimed the stage was set for trouble when the authorities dismantled the stage erected by the organisers.

“When I returned from work at about 5.30pm, I saw that the structure had been demolished but everything was still calm,” said Dr Manaf Che Mat, a medical doctor who lives in the area.

Not long after that, police road blocks went up at the main routes leading to the area. But the violence began after 10pm when people were arrested, stones and Molotov cocktails were thrown, garbage bins set on fire and the national flag torched. Then there was the shooting incident.

Technically, the clash took place between the police and ceramah goers. But the incident has acquired a political life of its own given the local politics and the use of the shooting controversy.

Both sides have given their version of the incident.

“There is no damage to Umno. This thing is between the police and PAS. They are trying to get attention because they are facing diminished support in the state. People can see what kind of party PAS is. We are celebrating 50 years of Merdeka, raising the Jalur Gemilang everywhere and they burn it. It's a tragedy,” said Terengganu information chief and Kemaman MP Datuk Ahmad Shabery Chik.

PAS, said Ahmad Shabery, had also broken the law and challenged the police by holding the ceramah without a permit.

“They should just admit they are in the wrong,” he said.

PAS think-tank head Dr Zulkifli Ahmad, on the other hand, accused Umno of “decapitation politics.”

“They know the opposition parties are feeling very bullish about the general election so they want to cut us off, portray us as violent, bad for the image of the country and a deterrent to investors. Their story line keeps changing. First one bullet fired, then they say two and now four,” said Dr Zulkifli.

PAS leaders have also asked for the person who was photographed burning the national flag to be identified.

The picture, published in all the newspapers, showed a youngish man in a long-sleeved sweatshirt, blue jeans and sandals setting fire to the flag.

“We are not making excuses about the flag. We want to know whether he is one of our members, a member of the public, plainclothes policeman or just a plain trouble-maker,” said Zulkifli.

The police have insisted that their stand has been not to react unless provoked. The state police chief had said that the constable who shot at rioters who attacked him was only trying to protect a group of women and children.

“The incident has given the opposition a bullet to aim at us. Even the use of tear gas is not good. This is Terengganu, not some big, bad city. PAS had few issues in the state but they are going to capitalise on this and put us on the defensive,” said Datuk Wan Albakri Mohd Noor, a Terengganu-based businessman with close ties to Umno.

Moreover, said Wan Albakri, the Mentri Besar Datuk Idris Jusoh had worked hard to bring about balance and confidence in the state.

Idris, who is in Mecca doing his umrah, has without a doubt done a far better job than PAS' Hadi.

PAS is already riding on the ceramah clash.

During a PAS ceramah in Machang, Kelantan, on Tuesday, slides of the incident were displayed as well as the picture of the man who was shot in the chest as he lay in the ICU under an oxygen mask. It was a very emotive image.

There will be political damage to both sides.

In the last few years, PAS had been trying hard to cultivate an image as a national party with aspirations to federal power. It has eschewed NGO-type of behaviour for more mainstream action on many issues.

As such, the incident is a setback of sorts for its image, especially outside of Terengganu. But the use of firearms has not gone down well with the local folk for whom political ceramahs are a way of life.

As for Umno, Idris had been running such a tight ship that some Umno politicians were even talking of a clean sweep.

The Barisan Nasional controls 28 of the 32 state seats and had been confident of sweeping the other four seats in the next general election. They are probably less sure now.

Politics is often not so much about who is speaking the truth than about perception. As such, there will be some collateral damage on Umno as well even though the issue is technically between the police and the opposition.

The Malay belt is highly politicised and Idris will have to do some very shrewd damage control if Umno wants to maintain its near perfect record in the state. Calm before the storm: Idris (second from left) probably had no idea of the storm ahead when he joined a reef clean-up in the calm blue waters off Terengganu but he will have to do some shrewd damage control in the weeks ahead. Mustafa: Alleged that Umno played a role in last week's clash. Shabery: Slammed PAS for breaking law and burning national flag. Wan Farid: PAS is desperate to shift the blame for their mistake.

Wan Ahmad Farid the best candidate, says Ahmad Shabery Cheek

SG LEMBING, PAHANG, SUN:

Deputy Home Minister Senator Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid is by far the best candidate to contest the Kuala Terengganu by-election said Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said the choice of Wan Farid by the Barisan Nasional will also see the coalition retain the seat which it won in the 2008 general election.

Ahmad Shabery is confident that the BN will better this time around in the by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of deputy education minister Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov. 28.

Wan Farid Can Bring 'Excellent Victory'

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh is able to bring an "excellent victory" for Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Kuala Terengganu by-election on Jan 17, former Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said Sunday night.

He said this was based on Wan Farid's credibility and experience.

"As I see it, with the selection of a suitable candidate -- an Umno division head and deputy minister of calibre -- we have a strong party machinery.

"Wan Farid's experience and credibility will ensure an excellent victory for BN in Kuala Terengganu," he told reporters after closing the 10th International Robot Olympiad 2008 at International Islamic University Malaysia in Gombak.

Idris who is Mara chairman represented Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Noh Omar at the function.

Idris said Wan Farid's position in the government and Umno would enable the BN machinery to be mobilised without any problem. Wan Farid is two-term Kuala Terengganu Umno chief.

However, Idris said BN did not expect an easy win, but better than what it achieved in the last general election because the contest in the coming by-election would also be stiff.

The Kuala Terengganu by-election is held following the death of Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov 28.

HIDDEN FROM MALAYSIAKINI: Umno, Wan Farid and Kuala Terengganu.

As Muda Mohd Nor announced in Malaysiakini the naming of BN candidacy for Kuala Terengganu by election, I thought it would be a good idea to see how Umno play it blogspherically (sorry for the term).

Deputy Home Minister Senator Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh is Barisan Nasional's standard bearer for the Jan 17 Kuala Terengganu by-election....

2. With Abdullah Badawi taking it off to Iran for a cooler temperature, Najib here is entrusted to absorb all the heat. IJN was somehow a little bit more than an issue. When Tun Mahathir questioned the motive of the move, as a man who got his chess opened up twice there, his love and attachment with IJN cannot be brushed aside. Just a little prelude to the by election.

3. When Tun Mahathir, for many years kept poking into fourth floor boys interference in Abdullah's administration, somehow Wan Farid figure was too stark to exclude. He is the chief of KT Umno for the second term, therefore a man of great influence.

4. The naughty mind keeps looking for answers for Zaid's exit. Zaid, a kelantanese, a rich lawyer, a failed politician but a man wishing to be in the limelight perpetually. Zaid was said to be Abdullah's choice as much as Farid for Kuala Terengganu.

5. I wish Farid luck and for all we know, the hot spice of Monsoon Cup and hadhari monuments will be sprayed to everybody's eyes by the opposition soon. What the heck, if that is good for Terengganu then let it be. If Perdana is good in other states, Camry good Perak, Mercedes good for Terengganu, then why should there be complaints on choices, alternatives and decisions. Thats how life goes.....

6. So where are UMNO Kuala Terengganu websites? I found these:

I may have missed some, but the three website at present suffice. Of course they can still be improved ......

Apa istimewa WAN FARID untuk Terengganu ?

Blogsfera memberi reaksi pelbagai tentang Wan Farid.

Senario Terengganu agak lain.

Laporan Malaysiakini bergantung siasatan polis
