Khairy called for Nizar and former senior executive councillor Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham to be stripped of their titles for uttering statements that incited hatred against the constitutional monarch.

He also called for Nizar and Ngeh to be banished from the state for questioning the ruler's decision to hand over the state government to BN. [Khairy: Use all means to stop Nizar

Separating KJ from Khairy

The Umno Youth deputy chief wants to clear misconceptions stemming from ‘KJ the caricature, the larger than life image’ and has gone down to the grassroots to prove his mettle in politics.

Admitting that he is a naturally shy and strange politician, Khairy Jamaluddin is, nevertheless, determined to correct misconceptions perpetuated about him in the last three years.

You have been touted as the richest unemployed young man in the country. Is this true? How do you finance your campaign?

That label was used by Lim Kit Siang in Parliament, to ridicule me. It is an unfair comment. I run a very personalised campaign. I do not spend much, except to travel to meet people. The regulations for money politics are very clear, very stringent.

There are claims that you only managed to secure the required number of nominations due to money politics and because of that, the longer campaign period will be to your advantage.

If you look at my nominations graph, it was steady and constant. There is no quick spike and levelling off. Furthermore, the nominations came from divisions with which I have long standing relations. I told my supporters, give me the nominations because you believe in me and not because of money. We cannot condone political corruption. Yes, the longer campaign period can be an advantage to me because I will have more time to explain the misconceptions about me.

During the recent division meetings, you claimed of having been a victim of manipulation. Can you be more specific?

Some people in Umno have dedicated themselves to demonising me, smearing my character in the last thee years. I have to go out to correct this negative perception.

Public opinion about you is still low. You have also lost your advantage with your father-in-law leaving office in five months’ time. Why did you decide to aim for the Umno Youth number one post now, instead of waiting until Umno members are more accepting of you?

Because this is a democratic contest. It is not as though people are making way for me. There is a vacancy and the three of us made it through. Also, now I can prove to the people who say that when Pak Lah (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi) is no longer around, there is no future for Khairy. I am contesting on my own strength. Whether I succeed or not, at least I know that it happened because of me.

Should you win, how would you explain that, considering the very obvious negative perception about you, besides the fact that you garnered the fewest nominations.

The general public already has a very jaundiced view of the Umno elections. Whoever wins will be accused of using money. But if I win, it is only because I have been successful in reaching out to everybody.

People say you have changed in the last few weeks. They say you are more friendly and approachable now. Your comment?

I am not aware that I have changed. I try to be true to myself. Maybe more people have come to know me better now. Maybe their view is no longer clouded by what has been said and written about me. There is this bit of misconception between KJ the caricature, the larger than life image painted of me, rather than the person that I am.

For so long you have been accused of being the power behind the Prime Minister. Do you take any responsibility for this perception?

No, because that is not true. I am saddened and disappointed with that perception. Pak Lah has been in politics for a very long time. He did not make his decisions based on what people tell him. And I never once sought to influence him. Of course, sometimes he would ask what I thought of certain things, but that is that.

You are educated and very articulate, but you seem quite awkward at socialising with Umno grassroots. Are you a shy person?

Yes, in a way. I suppose I am a very strange politician. I am naturally shy, especially among people I have just come to know. But if you give me a microphone and a thousand people, it is a different thing altogether. I am very quick to warm up to people, and do not have problems interacting with them.

But there are claims that you are not friendly with division leaders and that you sometimes totally ignore them when you go down to meet Youth members.

That is not true. I always make it a point to call division heads, if not see them personally. As Umno Youth deputy head, I am always very conscious of the need to respect the party hierarchy. It is a question of perception, not reality.

Sometimes, the programmes are very officious in the way they are structured. But now, during the campaign period, I have more time to mingle with everyone.

Do you have a preferred running mate?

I don’t have a preferred running mate per se. Both have their own strengths and vision for Umno Youth. Of course, the comfort level is different, as with any pair of individuals.

What is your vision for Pemuda Umno?

I would like to see Pemuda Umno becoming a truly national movement. Of course the first agenda will always be the Malay agenda. There is no running away from that. But we need to go beyond that and have a broader and inclusive outlook..

Pemuda Umno must be representative of Malaysia and the Malaysian view.

We need to be able to pull not only people who are on the fence, but also those in the Opposition. We are not doing that now. We are too close-minded, narrow and too elitist.

Gua Musang nomination goes to go Dr Khir, not Khairy

Umno has given the disputed nomination from the Gua Musang division to Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo and not Khairy Jamaluddin.
The Umno Youth secretary Datuk Abd Rahman Dahalan said in a statement that the Umno management committee had made the decision two days ago to accept the Kelantan Umno liaison committee’s decision to recognise the Oct 23 Youth meeting and not the Oct 25 one.
On Oct 23, Gua Musang picked Dr Khir as its choice for the Umno Youth chief post.
However, the Gua Musang division chief Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah declared that meeting was invalid and ordered that it should be re-convened. The Oct 25 meeting picked Khairy for the Youth top post.
Another disputed nomination is from the Gelang Patah division. In its Oct 11 Youth division meeting, it had picked Khairy for the movement’s top post.
However the following week, nine of the division’s Youth exco membes said they were not happy with the manner the meeting was conducted and threatened to resign unless there was a new meeting re-convened.
Abd Rahman said the Umno headquarters held a tribunal at 2pm Wednesday on the Gelang Patah issue and called the state liaison, the Johor Youth and the Gelang Patah Youth to discuss the appeal.
As for the Labuan Youth, the Umno management committee decided that a new meeting should be re-convened on Nov 29 which would be handled by the Umno headquarters and Federal Territories state liaison committee.
Umno has also directed three Umno branches in Seremban to reconvene their meetings but added that this would not have any effect on the Youth division meeting and its nominations.
Abd Rahman said he hoped that those divisions and branches which would have to hold new meetings would do so in an orderly manner in a family atmosphere so that there would be no repeat of controversies.

tunku : the umno disciplinary committee should investigates thoroughly what went wrong in gua musang and few other divisions which had similar case like gua musang. sometimes its dr khir and sometime its kj, what's cooking?

Khairy: Rise due to hard work

MALAYSIA'S world ranking is 151 and FA of Malaysia deputy president Khairy Jamaluddin (pic) is a happy man.

The national team's Fifa ranking has been rising steadily over the last two months -- it was 170 in August -- and Khairy said this is due to the hard work of the players and coach B. Sathianathan.

"This is a good development as the rise will motivate the players. The rise is also proof that the players and Sathianathan have been working hard," said Khairy yesterday.

Khairy, who is the national team manager, said the team's October ranking was 160.

"The Merdeka Tournament final appearance saw the team earning 43 points and that helped us move up nine places."

The team are currently playing in the Grand Challenge Cup in Myanmar and defeated Vietnam, their conquerors in the Merdeka Tournament final, 3-0 in their first match.

Yesterday, they qualified for the semi-finals after holding Hyundai Ulsan FC of South Korea 1-1.

However, Malaysia are still a long way from their best ever ranking of 75, achieved in August, 1993. -- CHRISTOPHER RAJ

MPs query Govt’s funding of RM1bil yearly to KLIA

SEVERAL MPs questioned the Government’s continuous allocation of RM1bil a year to the KL International Airport a decade after its construction.

Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim (PKR — Bandar Tun Razak) said after 10 years, the airport should be able to run on its own and meet its operating cost.

Debating the Budget at committee stage, he questioned why the Government still needed to allocate funds for the airport and asked the Finance Ministry for an explanation.

N. Gobalakrishnan (PKR — Padang Serai) said it was time that the Government looked into privatising KLIA. “This may ease the burden and save costs for the Government,” he said.

He added that in developed countries, airport management was handled by the private sector. In return, the airports were well managed with good quality of service.

Khairy Jamaluddin (BN — Rembau) questioned the sustainability of corporatised projects and the need for the Government to continue supporting them.

Citing an example, he said Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) was a failed project where the Government was forced to buy its equity in 2000. He said the IWK, which started in 1994, never made a profit and another RM250mil was being allocated to support it next year.

“Many incentives have been given to them and I am questioning their sustainability,” he said. Khairy asked about Cyberview Sdn Bhd in Cyberjaya, where he said companies and businesses were not inclined to venture into research and development. He added this was a diversion from the original intention of developing Cyberjaya.

The new KJ: Can he survive?
Ong Kian Ming & Yun Yang | Nov 6, 08 12:26pm

Khairy Jamaluddin, the current No 2 in Umno Youth, who is involved in an uphill struggle to win the Umno Youth chief post, has been trying to reinvent himself in the press by noticeably shifting to a more moderate, liberal and progressive position from his earlier career choice of portraying himself as a Malay ultra.

What can explain this perceptible shift in what has to be a strategic decision on his part? It surely cannot be because he hopes to win more votes among Umno Youth delegates by portraying himself as more moderate than his opponents.

MENGULAS MALAYSIAKINI: Mukhriz cuma menang sorak?

Mukhriz only winning the cheers
Mohd Rashidi Hassan | Oct 28, 08 12:12pm mukhriz mahathir and umno
opinion
Even though Mukhriz has won in terms of nominations from the divisions, will Khairy's friends cast their votes for Mukhriz so easily? That is a real worry for Mahathir.

4. Walaubagaimanapun, perkataan lama "giantkiller" masih lagi digunakan.

Umno Youth Chief Race: Khairy can now take on Mukhriz

It’s official. Khairy Jamaluddin can now take on Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir for the Umno youth chief post.

Khairy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s son-in-law, secured his 38th, 39th, and 40th nominations from the Tawau, Tangga Batu and Gua Musang divisions.

On hearing the news, Khairy said that he was “pleased to have qualified given the level of scrutiny I have had to go through, from the time I entered the political arena in 1999.”

“I shall subject myself now to an even more intense screening not just by delegates to the Pemuda UMNO General Assembly but all Malaysians who have encountered a range of stories, good and bad, about me.

“I accept that the onus is on me to explain my convictions and reasons for offering myself as a prospective leader,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mukhriz, the son of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is still in the lead with 64 nominations, well over the crucial 39 needed.

The third contender Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo has yet to make it with only 30 nominations.

His earlier nomination from Gua Musang was nullified and in a new meeting convened on Saturday, the nomination was given to Khairy instead.

The 191 divisions have until Nov 9 to hold their meetings and offer their nominations ahead of party polls in March.

Umno Youth race: Khairy needs only two more nominations

Khairy Jamaluddin is now just two nominations short of qualifying to contest the Umno Youth chief post.

He secured the latest nomination from the Hulu Terengganu division, bringing his total to 37.

Any aspirant for the movement’s top post needs 39 nominations to be eligible.

There are a number of Youth division meetings over the weekend and people would be watching to see if he makes it.

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir is in the forefront of the contest having qualified two weeks ago. He currently has 63 nominations.

The third contender for the post, former Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, is lagging and needs another nine nominations to be eligible.

The 191 divisions have to make their nominations for the March party election between Oct 9 and Nov 9. So far, more than two-thirds of the Youth wings have met.

KHAIRY: He rose too fast too soon?

IT WOULD be an understatement to say Mr Khairy Jamaluddin, the son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, has had a rough few weeks.

His political fortunes have plummeted from dizzying heights and the unthinkable has happened. He is struggling to qualify to contest the Umno Youth presidency when, not so long ago, it would have been his for the taking.

More than half the 191 Umno divisions have met to nominate the candidates and Mr Khairy has picked up just 36 nominations. His nemesis Mukhriz Mahathir, son of former premier Mahathir Mohamad, has sped ahead with 64 nominations.

Khairy dealt Putrajaya blow

Two Umno Youth divisions dealt a severe blow to Khairy Jamaluddin who is contesting for the Umno Youth chief post.

Putrajaya delivered a shocker when it picked Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir over Khairy as its choice for the Youth chief post. Khairy only managed to get 22 votes from the division compared to Mukhriz’s 33 votes and Khir’s 32.

This is significant given the fact that the division Youth chief Datuk Ahmad Zaki Zahid is a close friend of Khairy and special officer to Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The Tapah division also dealt a blow to the Prime Minister’s son-in-law. It picked him for the deputy post instead, and Mukhriz for chief.

Mukhriz and Khairy: Battle of the princes-in-waiting

Khairy Jamaluddin and Mukhriz Mahathir
heading towards clash for Umno Youth top post
a proxy battle
for their fathers, some say

October 16, 2008

THEIR fight for the top post in Umno Youth has been described as a proxy war between PM Abdullah Badawi and former premier Mahathir Mohamad.

NEXT IN LINE: Mr Khairy Jamaluddin (below) and Mr Mukhriz Mahathir (above) are tussling for the Umno Youth leadership position. PICTURES: CHINA PRESS, SINCHEW DAILY

Mr Khairy Jamaluddin is PM Abdullah's son-in-law and Mr Mukhriz Mahathir is Dr Mahathir's son.

So far, it seems that the Abdullah camp is faltering: The PM has announced he will not contest party polls next year and Mr Khairy is trailing behind Mr Mukhriz in latest nominations.

Mr Mukhriz, 44, has cleared the requisite 38 nominations while Mr Khairy, 32, has 20.

Despite this, many still expect Mr Khairy, a Rembau MP, to clear his first hurdle.

To date, 119 youth divisions have yet to hold their meetings to decide on which candidate to support.

Even though two other candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the post, Umno watchers are focused on the Khairy-Mukhriz battle.

Mr Khairy's rise to power within a short time is phenomenal.

In the span of a few years, he has gone from a special assistant to PM Abdullah to Umno Youth deputy chief and a Member of Parliament.

But his close association with his father-in-law has attracted critics, most vocal of whom is Dr Mahathir.

Jerlun MP Mukhriz, on the other hand, has been praised for his maturity and wisdom, said the New Straits Times.

His quiet ways have long given him solid support from members: He was the Youth exco member who gained the most votes in the last party election.

Yet critics feel he is his father's puppet and that his political career would be continuously influenced by Dr Mahathir.

Puppet?

He even acknowledges this himself.

Said Mr Mukhriz in a recent interview: 'I don't even pretend to disassociate myself from him. I can't. I do agree with many things he says, and I'm proud of him.

'You may say it's an unfair advantage but I think by now, people would have seen that I'm my own man .'

Political legacies aside, both men will have to convince their supporters that they can do the job.

And the key issue at stake is younger voters. Umno Youth failed to deliver the young Malay votes in the 8 Mar general election. Umno's candidate also lost the support of younger voters in the Permatang Pauh by-election in August.

The new leader therefore faces the tough task of reinventing the wing and winning back the young ground.

And both have been hard at work sweetening the ground.

Mr Khairy has campaigned extensively the last few months and even has a 'war team' comprising some seasoned faces including a former journalist and a couple of bright, young individuals.

Mr Mukhriz's strategy has been to cast himself as the underdog, sincere and able.

He claimed: 'I notice that they share my views, that Umno needs a drastic renewal among the young people. My 'Dare to Change' campaign tagline has been accepted and is palatable to them.'

Noted Umno Youth politician Zulflida Tahmali: 'The wind for Mukhriz is very powerful this time.'

Others say that age is Khairy's advantage as he can relate more to the grassroots - the youths - he needs to engage if he wins.

It may be early days yet, but it is certain that whoever wins has a chance not only to carve a prestigious political career, but continue a political legacy.

ZUBAIDAH ABU BAKAR: Is Mukhriz's popularity giving Khairy the jitters?

His closest rival in the contest to be Umno Youth chief, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, has cleared the requisite 39 nominations while he trails with 20.

There is no doubt that the 32-year-old son-in-law of outgoing Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will clear his first hurdle, as he only needs 18 more nominations (from the 119 youth divisions yet to hold their meetings) to take part in his first real contest in the party.

He was appointed into the Umno Youth executive council in 2001 by Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein (now the outgoing chief) and won the wing's No 2 post uncontested in 2004 when would-be challengers pulled out of the race.

Khairy's supporters have been proven wrong.

Mukhriz now holds the edge in the the contest for nominations and the "chief", as the Rembau MP is known as, has fallen behind.

GELANG PATAH: Delegates claim nomination was rigged

Tempers flared at the Gelang Patah Umno Youth meeting at a hotel here yesterday following the nomination of Deputy Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for the national Youth wing chief's post.
Most of the 146 delegates at the meeting, who were rooting for Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, voiced their dissatisfaction over the outcome, claiming that there was foul play during the vote-counting process.

They claimed that 70 per cent of the delegates had nominated Dr Khir and it was baffling to see Khairy's name cropping up at the end of the meeting at 5.30pm.

"I am shocked. You can say that none of us voted for Khairy. How could this be? There must be something wrong here," said former Gelang Patah Umno Youth vice-head Sahid Ammun.
