Mampukah Mukhriz menang di kubu PAS?

Ini bukan sahaja dalam politik, ini juga berlaku dalam banyak perkara lain yang beliau ceburi, termasuk perniagaan.

It would not be fair for us to say that his father's name did not play any significant role to anything he does, but that is the nature of things where 'names' play important role in gaining attention and trust from people. However, that does not mean that he abuses such influence, because it has been proven that he really knows how to do business. He did fall, get back up, face risks, failed, and got back up.

Thanks to his vast experience in facing all the competition in business world that he is described as one of the most successful entrepreneur, Dato’ Mukhriz definitely understand the things rakyat has to go through.

It true what wise men say,"the most effective politicians are the ones who are successful in other fields".

Even though Dato’ Mukhriz managed to build his own name in the country, he never ignored his constituency. He stayed over in rural homes of branch leaders for multiple times. He also do not have any problem in going through jungles to see issues involving people in rural areas, and solves those issues. This rejects all claims saying that he bring the 'elite' image as well as the image which is not suitable with the 'character' of Kedah state.

The interesting part is, most of his work are rarely reported or known by anyone but those who live in the rural areas. That is why, even when he is hit with negative claims, rakyat of Kedah are grateful over Dato’ Mukhriz's candidacy in state assembly seat instead of Parliament.

In short, the news is welcomed by people of Kedah as their prayers are finally answered. This also proves that Dato’ Seri Najib do listen to voice of rakyat despite of the work of few who tried to block him.

However, another thing which makes people of Kedah a little 'nervous; would be the news saying that the constituency contested by Dato’ Mukhriz is said as PAS' stronghold, DUN Ayer Hitam.   

In 2008, Dato’ Mukhriz won Jerlun seat with 2,205 majority while DUN Ayer Hitam, under Jerlun Parliament, was won by Abdul Ghani Ahmad from PAS with close majority of 506 votes. In 2004 GE, DUN Ayer Hitam was won by Othman Aziz from BN with majority of 860 votes. The number of voters for the DUN during the GE was 24,939.

Thus, to claim this constituency as PAS stronghold seem debatable. There should be a reason why rakyat in DUN Ayer Hitam decided to change their vote from BN in 2004 to PAS in 2008.

Based on the fact above, it is not impossible that rakyat in DUN Ayer Hitam might change back to BN for 2013, on factor of Dato’ Mukhriz. 

Generally, rakyat of Kedah's hope over Dato’ Mukhriz is very high, and if rakyat in DUN Ayer Hitam do not make the right decision, they will definitely described as disappointment for rakyat of the whole state.

Kedah needs a new spirit to get out of its 'comfort zone' and start to develop its capital city, Alor Setar. All these while, Alor Setar has been a 'dead city', no activity. And since it is taken over by PAS, the only thing that is alive are karaoke centres, and other job opportunities are still not available.

Kedah is said to be only a step in front of Kelantan in terms of mentality and social. In terms of economy, Kedah has just fallen thanks to PAS government's bad inefficiency.
Meanwhile, it is not too much for us to say that the challenge to develop Kedah in terms of its economy should begin by developing the mentality of its rakyat first.

Today, potential tourist centres in Kedah still cannot reach 'international standard'/ They include Arus Deras Sedim, Pantai Merdeka, Kuala Kedah etc. Hotels and resorts in Kedah still unable to get in line with the standard of professionalism of hotels in other states such as Melaka, Pahang etc. All of these are linked with 'mentality'.

The only place which seem 'energetic' in Kedah is Langkawi.

In terms of investments, Kedah also seem to have fallen soon after being taken over by PAS. Current Kedah Chief Minister never made any meetings with current investors or even get involved with state investment missions.

That is why, Dato’ Mukhriz's leadership as a successful businessman is needed to develop the economy. It might be tough at first because he would first need to solve the mentality of people around him as well as people of Kedah.

Kedah really need Dato’ Mukhriz to restore all the destruction and damage made by PAS. The destruction made by the party, even only for a single term, is devastating.
And if PAS Kedah remain in power after this GE, Kedah will definitely go in reverse, that it would require years before it is restored to how it was when led by BN.

Today, people of Kedah seem to be putting their hope on Dato’ Mukhriz on the decision of voters in DUN Ayer Hitam. The same hope is placed on BN leaders, party machinery, including those who are not listed as candidates, to help give the state to the rightful owner, for the betterment of everyone. 

Dato’ Mukhriz Mahathir has been a name which seem synonymous with rakyat of Kedah, especially in rural areas. However, his father's name, is not giving him any justice because no matter how hard he works, he would still be accused of using his father's name. Revive second JB-Singapore bridge project, says Mukhriz

KUALA LUMPUR: It is time to restart the bridge project to replace the Causeway linking Johor Bahru and Singapore since all customs, immigration and quarantine matters will be handled at the new Customs, Immigration & Quarantine (CIQ) Complex.

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir (Jerlun-BN) said the new road linking Bangunan Sultan Iskandar to the Causeway has caused major traffic congestion in Johor Bahru and feels it is time to restart the project.

“Actually, I have said this in 2005 when the decision was first made to cancel the project. There was a debate on whether the bridge should be a straight one or a scenic one, and the project was cancelled supposedly because the Johor people themselves didn’t want it.

“However, we know that Johoreans were not amenable to the sale of sand to Singapore and to allowing their airspace to be used by Singapore jet fighters, which I think are valid concerns.

“But never did they say that they didn’t want the bridge. Now I feel that, in support of the statement made by Pemuda Johor, particularly Johor Umno Youth information chief Khalid Mohamad (who is also Johor Bahru Umno Youth chief), the bridge project should be looked into again with the possibility of having it restarted as soon as possible,” he said in parliament lobby yesterday.

Mukhriz also said the bridge would support the Iskandar Malaysia development and also enhance trade between Singapore and Malaysia, in particular Johor.

It would also contribute towards the well-being of the Indonesia-Singapore-Malaysia growth triangle.

“These will be greatly enhanced by a new bridge. Whether it will be scenic one or a plain one doesn’t matter. We need a bridge that does the job of alleviating the problem of congestion not just within JB but also from Singapore to JB,” said Mukhriz.

Mukhriz ‘not being racist’

IT is baseless to term Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir’s (BN – Jerlun) call for a single education system as racist, Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

“The statement was meant for all to be united,” he said at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

In Malaysia’’s education system, two streams exist with the main stream being national schools and the other being government-assisted schools like Chinese and Tamil national type schools, mission schools and religious schools, he said.

Mukhriz Mahathir has really had to fight for every inch in his political ascent against the powers that be. Once, a rather obscure political figure in Umno Youth he has risen against the odds stacked up to thwart his political agenda.

The dawn of Abdullah Badawi's now doomed administration set the tone for what Mukhriz has had to endure heretofore. For starters, Mukhriz had to plead with the all-powerful Khairy Jamaluddin to reinstate a signed and sealed contract to Opcom Holdings Bhd. Mukhriz was reduced to begging for his rice bowl to be returned to him.

Many people had written off Mukhriz as having no future in Umno as the Prime Minister's son in law had already usurped the position of Naib Ketua Pemuda Umno uncontested by way of political pressure and clout exerted from the office of the presently outgoing Ketua Pemuda Umno. Umno hopefuls and ordinary members were cowed into acceding that Khairy Jamaluddin-an unknown individual of only 28 years of age, to helm the second highest position in Umno Youth.

Mukhriz was effectively sidelined and relegated to political obscurity. While 'KJ' enjoyed the political patronage that guaranteed his meteoric rise, Mukhriz was continuously thumped down. Things got much worse when Mukhriz stood up against the Prime Minister and demanded his resignation.

Until now, the attempts to destroy Mukhriz are in overdrive. With the highest nominations and strong support from Umno grassroots members whom are disenchanted with the failures of Abdullah Badawi and "KJ"-Mukhriz has emerged as a political figure fit for the times.

Everybody knows Mukhriz to be a clean, level-headed, approachable and wise leader. Yet the political manipulation to tarnish his reputation and deny his views from being heard is in play. Mukhriz's Berani Berubah! campaign which was a festive affair with over 500 grassroots members and many Ketua Pemudas in attendance was hardly seen in the local broadsheets despite hoards of journalists who were present at the event. KJ's, on the other hand that was attended by a small handful of nominal Umno officials was highlighted in bold with the benefit of generous pictures.

Most of the time, Mukhriz's statements, which are courted by journalists, are not published. His website Mukhriz.com was reported by Malaysiakini (Top Blogs) to be under virus attack and had to be shut down temporarily despite the site being fitted with the latest protection. Furthermore, in a three hour long interview with The Star newspaper that covered every important issue that is of concern to Malaysians, it was surprising to say the least that the published interview was eventually framed in a manner that depicts Mukhriz to be involved in buying votes ("Mukhriz throws down the gauntlet at his accusers to prove money politics", November 8, 2008). In fact on the Umno battlefield and through the grapevine the word was out that Mukhriz is a clean candidate and exactly what Umno needs at this critical time.

Thus, the opening sentence of the interview that reads "BESIEGED by claims that he is not walking his talk on the issue of money politics ..." is nothing further from the truth. One cannot help but wonder why the interview was slanted in this way. Now, in what seems like coordinated attacks to damage Mukhriz's credibility - opposing blogs and agents in the field are hoping to damage this leading candidate in the lead up to the long delayed Umno elections.

The character assassination of Mukhriz Mahathir has just begun. Every attempt will be made to deny the voice of the grassroots and kill off Mukhriz Mahathir's agenda to reform and rejuvenate Umno.

Major Money Politics Cases Must Be Investigated Fast - Mukhriz

JERLUN, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- The Umno disciplinary board must investigate major cases of money politics fast so that the culprits will be prevented from contesting party elections in March, said Jerlun Member of Parliament Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir.

The Umno Youth Exco member said small cases should also be investigated but focus should on the the major cases.

"We fear that if action is not taken against those involved in major cases, only the small fish will be caught while the big fish escape," he told reporters here last night.

He said the Umno disciplinary board had received 900 reports on money politics and hoped that they would be investigated.

Mukhriz who would be contesting the Umno Youth chief post supported a statement by Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib that the party should revert to the original two nominations to qualify for contests as it would stamp out money politics.

He said leaders at the grassroots should be allowed to nominate national leaders during branch elections.

"They should be involved in the election of party leaders including that at the highest level," he added.

Calon Ketua Pemuda Umno, Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr. Mahathir tetap dengan pendiriannya untuk tidak memegang sebarang jawatan dalam kerajaan sekiranya diberi mandat sebagai ketua pergerakan itu pada pemilihan parti Mac depan.

Katanya, keputusan itu dibuat kerana beliau mahu menumpukan sepenuh perhatian untuk mengembalikan keyakinan rakyat terhadap Umno dan Barisan Nasional (BN).

"Sebelum ini saya telah umumkan kalau boleh saya tidak berminat memegang jawatan dalam kerajaan sekiranya diberi mandat untuk menjadi Ketua Pemuda Umno sebab kerja politik kita dalam tempoh waktu empat tahun menjelang pilihan raya umum ke-13 ini penting dan saya tidak mahu dialih perhatian dengan tugas tugas rasmi kerajaan daripada tugas yang saya ingat jauh lebih penting pada masa ini iaitu tanggungjawab untuk meyakinkan semula rakyat terhadap parti kerajaan," katanya.

"Saya kira walaupun saya anggota Parlimen dan biasanya jawatan penting dalam kerajaan dipilih dari kalangan anggota Parlimen saya rasa biar dulu lah kot," katanya dalam sidang akhbar sempena taklimat Anugerah Francais Malaysia 2008 di sini hari ini.

Mukriz ialah Pengerusi Persatuan Francais Malaysia.

Mengulas amalan rasuah, Mukhriz berkata, proses pemilihan parti sepatutnya memberi kekuatan kepada parti.

"Kalau ada amalan amalan dalam proses pemilihan ini yang sebenarnya melemahkan parti, ini akan menambahkan lagi ketidakyakinan rakyat terhadap Umno, katanya.

Mukhriz throws down the gauntlet at his accusers to prove money politics

This is the first in a series of Umno interviews. Next on the pipeline are Q & As with ex-Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo and deputy youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

Mukhriz: Walking the talk.

BESIEGED by claims that he is not walking his talk on the issue of money politics, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, in an interview with The Star, has thrown down the gauntlet at his accusers ... prove it and he will back out of the race for the Umno Youth chief post.

Q: What is your view on the five months campaign period.

A: This gives us ample time to meet the delegates. But it can also be abused because it gives certain parties more time to buy votes. If money politics is not resolved, it does not matter what we want to bring to the party, it will come to nought because Umno will lose the trust of the people in the next general elections.

Q: Since you are an interested party, the option to go by the book or join the game is also opened to you.

A: I have a clean track record and I am not about to ruin my reputation by indulging in money politics. People know that I lost in Kubang Pasu in 2004 (for the division Umno Youth chief) with my honour intact because I did not use money. I also won the national exco seat with the highest votes. Until now, people still come to me and say that they respect me because I do not indulge in this kind of nonsense.

Q: But lately many people are saying that all your talk about eradicating money politics are just rhetoric and that you are equally involved in such acts.

A: Then they should bring this up. People who were offered money under my name should report it. I know that some people are saying that I am dua kali lima (meaning the same) when I speak about these ills, but people on the ground who really know me will tell you that I am not like that.

Q: There are claims that you have appointed agents, that so and so who are close to you, travelled all over the country to buy nominations on your behalf since the division meetings started.

A: They are not representing me. I have to admit it is easy to be framed. All it takes is for someone to bring money bags and say “please vote for Mukhriz.”

Q: How do you plan to protect yourself against such political manoeuvring?

A: Just by being me so that people can judge me by my deeds. I pride myself with the kind of integrity that is much needed in Umno. I will do nothing that can bring disrepute to the party.

Q: Some people believe that you don’t have what it takes to be an Umno Youth leader. They say that your are too soft and you lack the fiery temperament normally associated with Umno Youth leaders.

A: Look at my track record, I have always been consistent and have been so for the four years I was active in politics. I may not have ‘in your face’ type of approach, but my firmness and steadfastness on important issues is well known. I have been going against the grain when it was not a politically correct thing to do and I am not the type who toady to anyone. I am not about to shout in someone’s face and call for rally. I may not be the type that demonstrates in public to get front page news coverage. But I concede that each man has his own way and means. Our performance in March and the results of the Permatang Pauh by-election have shown that our present method may not be the best. Maybe my style is more acceptable.

Q: Do you think Umno Youth is ready for the kind of change that you are trying to promote?

A: I qualified to contest within three days of the start of the division meetings. I believe the resounding support that they have shown thus far is not so much for me but more for what I stand for. They understand that change is critical for Umno if it is to rule the Government next term.

Q: You have the highest nominations thus far. How confident are you that this will translate into real votes come March.

A: Figures don’t lie. Should I lose, it would mean that grassroots obviously want me but not the delegates. If that is the case, are we certain that this is the best way for Umno to conduct its election?

Q: What do you see as your greatest challenge in the next five months.

A: Money politics. I we don’t rectify the perception that Umno is fraught with money politics, we will definitely lose in the next elections. It will not be due to the Opposition being stronger, but because the people are disgusted with us. I find it disturbing that Umno is no longer associated with good values which is the key to winning back the people’s support.

Q: Among the three contenders for Umno Youth chief post, you are seen as the most politically naive. Will that cost you votes?

A: I’d rather be naive then be dirty. When I tell people not to take that RM200, they say, come on its only RM200. This is the point where the system breaks down. If being naive means standing up for your principles then I am willing to be naive. I will back off if people say that I use money.

Q: What will your strategy be in the next five months.

A: By being myself. Talking is fun, but I don’t go about accusing others. I hope people have the good sense to judge me by my deeds. I would like to win, but I am not that desperate to the extent of setting aside my dignity and principles. We lost Kedah (to the Opposition) we lost the state, yet the intensity of the competition for party posts was unprecedented.

Q: Does being Tun Dr Mahathir’s son help you in your political quest?

A: Much as I respect my father for his sacrifices for this country, I am not beholden to him and I don’t necessarily have to agree with him all the time. In fact, when he left Umno he was implying that I should do the same. He was quite disappointed when I decided against it. People told me that my ratings fell after that. He also said that he supported Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (as Umno president) when I had clearly said that Najib is the best successor. We have had differences in opinions.

Umno Is Not Sacred, Should Be Open To Criticism, Says Mukhriz

BALING, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- Umno members must stop regarding Umno as a sacred party that it cannot be criticised and reformed, said Jerlun member of parliament Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

"If the members still think that Umno is a party that cannot change, then the party cannot prevail and will be destroyed sooner or later.

"As a result of certain factors due to weaknesses in the party, Umno is now being challenged from within and outside, and its future will depend on the courage of party members to reform it with a new model," he said at a forum on "Muslim Malay Politics: Conflict and Resolution", organised by the Baling Umno division, here today.

He said Umno members must be brave to effect change if they regarded Umno as the bastion of the struggle of the Malays.

Mukhriz said in a situation where Umno was seen as rather weak, the other Barisan Nasional component parties started issuing threats, and raising and questioning various matters.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar in his speech, said the stern action taken against the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) was in the interest of national security.

He said such action had also been taken against the Al Arqam movement and when it was banned, the Malays however did not react as the Hindraf supporters had.

Syed Hamid said the Internal Security Act was not used indiscriminately as alleged by some quarters, but under certain circumstances to safeguard national security.

‘Boot camp’ judge resigns

A High Court judge who revealed the existence of a boot camp for judges back in 1997 has tendered his resignation and will leave office on Dec 1.

Datuk Ian Chin wrote a letter to the King on July 16 to resign and went on leave on Aug 21.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department T. Murugiah said this in reply to Tian Chua (PKR - Batu) who asked whether the Government had taken steps to investigate the accusations made by Chin against former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

With Chin’s resignation, there was no need to investigate the matter, said Murugiah.

Earlier, Murugiah told Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir (BN - Jerlun) that the Government did not intend to make representation to the King to put Chin before a tribunal.

On July 15, several MPs, while debating on the Judges Remuneration (Amendment) Bill, criticised Chin in the Dewan Rakyat over his war of words with Dr Mahathir.

Some questioned his revelation, made only after Dr Mahathir had stepped down, and some called for him to be sacked for being “judicially immature”.

It prompted Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia to intervene. He asked Karpal Singh to read out Article 127 of the Federal Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Order 36(8) to remind MPs not to debate on judges’ behaviour unless a substantive motion was moved with the consent of 55 MPs.

In June, Chin caused a stir when he claimed that Dr Mahathir had made a thinly veiled threat against judges at the Judges Conference on April 24, 1997.

He claimed Dr Mahathir had threatened to sack judges who failed to deliver judgments to his or the Government’s liking.

Chin had also said that Dr Mahathir was dissatisfied over his unwillingness to award astronomical sums in damages in two libel suits in 1997, and that “errant” judges had been sent to a boot camp in an “attempt to indoctrinate them to hold the view that the Government’s interest was more important than all else”.

Yang gagah tentu dapat memikat anakgadisTok Batin atau Bendahara. Dari sudut itu, Khairy adalah perkasa!

3. Dalam setengah masyarakat pula, trofi tengkorak musuh tergantung di tiang seri rumah adalah manifestasi kepada kekuatan dan kehebatan. Senario itu tidak wujud lagi dalam dunia moden yang ada sekarang.

4. Walaubagaimanapun, perkataan lama "giantkiller" masih lagi digunakan. Rahman Bakar diberi title itu waktu menewaskan Hadi Awang. Kita hidup dalam dunia moden tetapi kita masih terus pinjam senario zaman silam. Kita tetap hebat bila menggempur dan membunuh. Memang setitik darah pun tidak tumpah ke bumi, tetapi masa depan mangsa jadi gelap dan imej musuh tercalar.

5. Bush junior telah menggempur Iraq tanpa rasa simpati. Beliau hanya bersedia untuk tunduk bertafakur dan tunjukkan rasa simpati dan sedih bila ada mayat askar Amerika dibawa turun dari kapalterbang. Rating rendah Bush pada peringkat awal pentadbirannya dapat merangkak naik bila bom dan senapang muntah di bumi Iraq. Pemimpin zaman moden masih bersandarkan kaedah lama yang ganas dan brutal. Pemimpin perlu ada ciri-ciri ganas. Dunia akan sunyi dan sepi bila pemimpin hanya ada dalam pattern Mahatma Ghandi dan Mandella.

6. Bila Khairy mengajak Mukhriz berdebat, ramai dapat mengerti dan faham apa tujuannya. Kemudian kita mahu terus bertanya angkara siapakah maka debat Shabery-Anwar perlu diadakan tempuh hari. Hingga hari ini, kita rasa sangsi dengan objektif dan kesan dari debat tersebut.

7. Malaysia belum bersedia dengan pertunjukan laga ayam dalam politik. Sedangkan debat parlimen boleh dibuat secara semborono apatah lagi untuk jawatan Ketua Pemuda. Yang sudah lupa, wajar diingatkan bahawa dalam waktu berkempen PRU12 tempuh hari, Khairy juga pernah diajak berdebat secara terbuka oleh Bad dari Pakatan Rakyat. Malang sekali, Khairy waktu itu menolak mentah-mentah.

8. Kita tidak wajar buat apa-apa keputusan dengan debat sedemikian. Pemimpin tidak perlu bersandarkan dengan debat untuk terus naik. Rakyat dapat menilai seseorang pemimpin secara "wholeness". Komitmen untuk kesejahteraan negara dan rakyat bukan terletak dicelah-celah debat. Khairy telah berada di persada politik negara buat sekian lama dengan protection dari Bapa Mertua dan media perdana telah memberi ruang kepada Khairy selama ini, di mana ada masa-masanya publisiti untuk Khairy jauh melebihi Timbalan Perdana Menteri sendiri. Khairy tidak perlu satu lagi publisiti.

9. Ayam Serama hanya wajar pada musim-musim tertentu. Main Ayam laga tidak wajar untuk budak kosmopolitan seperti Khairy. Debat tidak lebih dari pertandingan ayam serama. Orang Kelantan yang telah beri sokongan padu pada Khairy dalam pencalonan tentu akan faham mitos Ayam Serama.

10. Kita tidak mahu sesiapa hanya menang sorak tetapi kampung tergadai. Batu putih adalah tanda putih mata kepimpinan Abdullah. Kini Shahrir Samad telah merungut kenapa peniaga bumiputera dipinggirkan dalam Koridor Ekonomi Iskandar. Komitmen untuk negara dan bangsa hanya ada pada orang-orang tertentu sahaja. Orang seperti itu adalah istimewa dan bertuahlah rakyat dan negara kelak.

11. Rakyat sudahnya faham siapa pemimpin yang wajar diketengahkan, kecualilah semua perwakilan adalah dari jenis yang boleh dibeli dengan wang ringgit dan janji-janji. Di mana UMNO kini?

Umno Youth Chief Race: Khairy can now take on Mukhriz

It’s official. Khairy Jamaluddin can now take on Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir for the Umno youth chief post.

Khairy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s son-in-law, secured his 38th, 39th, and 40th nominations from the Tawau, Tangga Batu and Gua Musang divisions.

On hearing the news, Khairy said that he was “pleased to have qualified given the level of scrutiny I have had to go through, from the time I entered the political arena in 1999.”

“I shall subject myself now to an even more intense screening not just by delegates to the Pemuda UMNO General Assembly but all Malaysians who have encountered a range of stories, good and bad, about me.

“I accept that the onus is on me to explain my convictions and reasons for offering myself as a prospective leader,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mukhriz, the son of former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, is still in the lead with 64 nominations, well over the crucial 39 needed.

The third contender Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo has yet to make it with only 30 nominations.

His earlier nomination from Gua Musang was nullified and in a new meeting convened on Saturday, the nomination was given to Khairy instead.

The 191 divisions have until Nov 9 to hold their meetings and offer their nominations ahead of party polls in March.

Transparency Needed In Combating Money Politics

Money politics must be combated in a transparent manner because it can cause the downfall of the party if not checked, Umno Youth chief aspirant Datuk Mukhriz Tun Mahathir said.

The menace would also erode the people's confidence in leaders who were trustworthy and had integrity, he said.

"The people will find it difficult to accept leaders who are elected in such a despicable manner because they want leaders who are open, transparent and clean," he told reporters at a ceramah in Kampung Teluk here last night.

He feared that if money politics was not checked now it would result in the people rejecting the incumbent leaders in the next general election.

Mukhriz, who is an Umno Youth executive committee member, said the party elections in March would be more keenly contested than before, judging from the nominations received so far.

Mukhriz has so far received 63 nominations, far exceeding the requisite 39 nominations for the post of Umno Youth chief.

He secured the latest nomination from the Hulu Terengganu division, bringing his total to 37.

Khairy dealt Putrajaya blow

Two Umno Youth divisions dealt a severe blow to Khairy Jamaluddin who is contesting for the Umno Youth chief post.

Putrajaya delivered a shocker when it picked Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir over Khairy as its choice for the Youth chief post. Khairy only managed to get 22 votes from the division compared to Mukhriz’s 33 votes and Khir’s 32.

This is significant given the fact that the division Youth chief Datuk Ahmad Zaki Zahid is a close friend of Khairy and special officer to Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The Tapah division also dealt a blow to the Prime Minister’s son-in-law. It picked him for the deputy post instead, and Mukhriz for chief.

THEIR fight for the top post in Umno Youth has been described as a proxy war between PM Abdullah Badawi and former premier Mahathir Mohamad.

Mr Khairy Jamaluddin is PM Abdullah's son-in-law and Mr Mukhriz Mahathir is Dr Mahathir's son.

So far, it seems that the Abdullah camp is faltering: The PM has announced he will not contest party polls next year and Mr Khairy is trailing behind Mr Mukhriz in latest nominations.

Mr Mukhriz, 44, has cleared the requisite 38 nominations while Mr Khairy, 32, has 20.

Despite this, many still expect Mr Khairy, a Rembau MP, to clear his first hurdle.

To date, 119 youth divisions have yet to hold their meetings to decide on which candidate to support.

Even though two other candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the post, Umno watchers are focused on the Khairy-Mukhriz battle.

Mr Khairy's rise to power within a short time is phenomenal.

In the span of a few years, he has gone from a special assistant to PM Abdullah to Umno Youth deputy chief and a Member of Parliament.

But his close association with his father-in-law has attracted critics, most vocal of whom is Dr Mahathir.

Jerlun MP Mukhriz, on the other hand, has been praised for his maturity and wisdom, said the New Straits Times.

His quiet ways have long given him solid support from members: He was the Youth exco member who gained the most votes in the last party election.

Yet critics feel he is his father's puppet and that his political career would be continuously influenced by Dr Mahathir.

Puppet?

He even acknowledges this himself.

Said Mr Mukhriz in a recent interview: 'I don't even pretend to disassociate myself from him. I can't. I do agree with many things he says, and I'm proud of him.

'You may say it's an unfair advantage but I think by now, people would have seen that I'm my own man .'

Political legacies aside, both men will have to convince their supporters that they can do the job.

And the key issue at stake is younger voters. Umno Youth failed to deliver the young Malay votes in the 8 Mar general election. Umno's candidate also lost the support of younger voters in the Permatang Pauh by-election in August.

The new leader therefore faces the tough task of reinventing the wing and winning back the young ground.

And both have been hard at work sweetening the ground.

Mr Khairy has campaigned extensively the last few months and even has a 'war team' comprising some seasoned faces including a former journalist and a couple of bright, young individuals.

Mr Mukhriz's strategy has been to cast himself as the underdog, sincere and able.

He claimed: 'I notice that they share my views, that Umno needs a drastic renewal among the young people. My 'Dare to Change' campaign tagline has been accepted and is palatable to them.'

Noted Umno Youth politician Zulflida Tahmali: 'The wind for Mukhriz is very powerful this time.'

Others say that age is Khairy's advantage as he can relate more to the grassroots - the youths - he needs to engage if he wins.

It may be early days yet, but it is certain that whoever wins has a chance not only to carve a prestigious political career, but continue a political legacy.
