ZAID WITH MALAYSIAKINI: Anwar can be PM but ..

It is nice to hear from Zaid after a little pause in his political pursuit as reported in Malaysiakini today. As expected, his inclination towards Anwar and PKR is very visible in the news report.

  • From Malaysiakini
  • Anwar can be PM, but needs to tone down
  • Former Umno leader Zaid Ibrahim believes that the opposition leader has what it takes to make it to the top, but advises him to change his 'grandstanding ways'.

2. As a reminder, Zaid is a politician, a lawyer and an entrepreneur. He was somewhere there in Umno political battle, then landed a Ketua Bahagian post. Somehow during corruption cleansing drive, he was found involved in some form of political negative elements. Somebody was saying things like politik wang. Action has been taken on him.

3. Then, out of nowhere he was taken on board, first being made a senator and then the Minister in charge of legal matters. Everybody was saying that zaid was Abdullah's choice. And of course he had his days, coming in strong with daily press conferences.

4. I assume zaid's statesment were abit too much that some senior ministers commented "that has not been discussed in cabinet yet..." Then things come in spasm almost a crusade, but ended with his premature departure. He befriended oppositions, then he was sacked from Umno. A brief account on zaid.

5. What he said about Anwar is absolutely true because that has been his [anwar] way ever since his crusade against famine in Baling bringing in thousands of youngsters with him. Alas, nobody did make analysis on Famine in Baling

6. Now that Zaid has taken international stage, it is worth to read his recent lengthy speech.

Speech by Datuk Zaid Ibrahim
Regional Outlook Forum organised by Institute of South East Asian Studies

1. I want to thank ISEAS and in particular Ambassador Kesavapany for this honour. Ambassador Kesavapany told me that I would have 30 minutes or so to talk about Malaysia, and since it’s a luncheon talk it would probably be light hearted and not too spirited. That will be difficult, like asking me to be on my best behaviour while in the company of Paris Hilton, but I will try.

2. Malaysia is a wonderful country and its people are among the most hospitable. If Australia is the Lucky Country, then Malaysia is the Blessed Country. Malaysia is also unique in another way. Not many countries have their Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism welcoming tourists. Many of you have visited the country and will no doubt remember the giant billboards along the highway with the imposing picture of a smiling Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism welcoming you to the country. Now of course, after March this year, you will see a new set of billboards replacing the expensive current ones. In March 2009, Malaysia will have a brand new Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and, in all likelihood, a new Minister for Tourism as well. Hopefully they will not spend too much on the billboards for they might have to change them again. [ Read Full text here Malaysia Today, Malaysia ]

I should highlight this ......

From Malaysiakini
Zaid: PM had agreed to non-disclosure
Praba Ganesan | Nov 10, 08 2:02pm
breaking news updated 5.20pm The former cabinet member says the prime minister had agreed with him not to disclose the amount paid to judges who had been sacked in 1988.

They are not good at disguising their intention..., some of us. At this minute, there are sections in the society that dont give a damn about the so called judicial reforms. Read and understand Zaid deep.

The Barisan Nasional government must abandon its reworked concept of the social contract, said Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

He said the Government must now embrace a fresh perspective borne out of discussions and agreements made in good faith with all the communities in this country.

“It is time for us all to practise a more transparent and egalitarian form of democracy and to recognise and respect the rights and dignity of all the citizens of this country,” he said Friday at the 21st LawAsia Conference 2008 here.

Zaid was invited to speak on “Malaysia - A Lost Democracy?” on the second day of the conference.

He said the social contract was restructured unilaterally in the 1980s by a certain segment of the Barisan leadership, which marked the advent of “ketuanan Melayu” or Malay supremacy, that allowed for developments that had resulted in the country’s current state of affairs.

“The non-Malay Barisan component parties were perceived by Umno to be weak and in no position to exert influence.

“Bandied about by Umno ideologues, the social contract took on a different, more racialist tone.

“The essence of its reconstructed meaning was that Malaya is primarily the home of the Malays and that the non-Malays should acknowledge that primacy by showing deference to the Malays and Malay issues.

“Affirmative action and special status became a matter of privilege by reference to race rather than of need and questioning of this new status quo was not to be tolerated,” he said.

He said majoritarianism had become the governing paradigm of governance as the character and nature of rights were defined by Malay interests and the Malays.

He said the institutions of government were such that the Malays were effectively represented and there was no way the interest of the Malays could be taken away other than through their own weakness and folly.

“It was, and still is, impossible to reconcile the principles of equality and civil rights of the people of this country with the primacy of one group over all others,” he said.

Zaid said the country had failed miserably in dealing with complex issues of society by resorting to a political culture of promoting fear and division amongst the people.

“The ketuanan Melayu model has failed and it has resulted in waste of crucial resources, energy and time and has distracted from the real issues confronting the country,” he said.

He said the results of the March 8 elections showed that the Barisan was no longer exclusively speaking for the rakyat.

“Prompting discourse and dialogue is essential as we must learn to talk and listen to one another again,” he said.

He also said goodwill must continue to strive to bring about change so that the trust of all Malaysians could be rebuilt.

“From that trust, we can rebuild the country where we do not live in fear, but in freedom; that the rights of all Malaysians are acknowledged, respected and protected by the system of law that is just and fair,” he said.

You cant quarrel and stay united. Singapore being idolised by some leaders never allow that. It is all about synergy!

5. Rakyat sedar betapa sejak awal lagi, Kerajaan pimpinan Abdullah kelihatan kurang synergy. That's how it goes. Thats more of a reason, for a team requiring a leader. And thats what missing in Leadership. It is both bad and sad.

Mereka perlu berjiwa besar (bukan mulut besar).

Understanding Zaid's action: a casual observation.

BERITADARIGUNUNG

There is a natural tendency among men to live in peace. Then effort is made to create a safe environment. Thats how life goes. But one has to be clear about many things. What is peace? What are attributes of peace? What is environment? What is safe?

I read a simple essay on Lee Kuan Yew. Mr Lee is a giant for a little city state. Lets read the essay, and then make a fair assessment. Dont be bias, put aside sentiments and personal feelings. While agreeing to the point that peace is never static and in fact it is transcient in nature, we do have to allow a little bit of flexibility and being pragmatic most of the time. There is more to leadership than to succumb to limited aim and scope.

On man-made Law, i suppose it was not crafted for the fun of it. There is a larger picture to it. We do have to agree that not everyone has the privilege to be blessed with wisdom and a view of the larger picture. Most of us are walking about with limited aim and scope in life. Lee in Singapore and our own Tun Mahathir are two interesting leader to be analysed. Their wisdom is far reaching.

Here is the essay.......

Lee Kuan Yew - First Premier of Singapore

When Lee Kuan Yew resigned as Prime minister of Singapore in 1990 it was the end of the reign of a tiger; a man who took no prisoners in his drive to the top. Serving his country from 1959 until 1990, he was the longest serving prime minister of any country at that time.

Had it not been for the Japanese occupation of Singapore it is doubtful that he would have led his country, but that occupation had such a profound effect on him that it completely changed the course of his life. He was determined that no foreign power would ever again control his country and that his countrymen would never again be “the playthings of a foreign power”. His treatment by the Japanese was such that this burning ambition remained with him always.

After the war he was educated in England as a lawyer and on his return to Singapore joined the pro-British Progressive Party, for which he acted as an election agent in the 1951 elections. However, Lee was born of Chinese parents, and had a Chinese attitude to life and politics and realized, correctly, that no party could succeed in Singapore without the support of the Chinese working class, even though the majority at that time was not allowed to vote.

His opportunity came in 1953 when the Rendell Commission allowed all local born Singaporeans to have the vote, which enfranchised millions of Chinese-speaking voters. Lee Kuan Yew founded the People’s Action Party in 1954, a leftist party that formed an alliance with the trades unionists. The Communist Part was illegal in Malaysia, so the pro-communist trades unions considered an alliance with a respectable political party to be to their advantage. The British members of the PAP needed the support of the Chinese trade unionized masses to help them gain power, and both sides had the same objective of self government for Singapore and the removal of British rule.

Lee was appointed Secretary General of the People’s Action Party, and held that post until 1992, well after his retirement from national office. Thanks to the support of the Chinese-speaking masses, he was elected into the Legislative Assembly in 1955, and after his party won the next election, he became the first prime minister of his country in 1959. However, this was only the start of his work, not the end.

Lee ran a very tight ship. He possessed the Chinese trait of strict discipline and obedience of orders. When he took office he found the political scene to be full of corruption and he stamped this out immediately. He accepted no argument or criticism, and had no hesitation in destroying anybody who stood against him. The way he cut out corruption was to make it illegal, and he appointed an agency that enforced these laws rigorously. He was a tenacious fighter who left anybody who opposed him beaten. He enforced strict discipline and complete intolerance of disobedience. If you agreed with him you were fine. If not . . .

He had a typical attitude towards the severe housing shortage that existed when he took over the reins of power. He instituted a building program that increased state ownership of affordable housing from below 10% to over 90%. He invested in his country’s industry to provide employment to everybody, and the ability to afford the housing. Anybody who opposed him was politically destroyed. He could not be beaten. He was tenacious and refused to be beaten in anything he believed was right for his country. He abhorred corruption.

However, although the standard of living improved dramatically in Singapore, he was described by some as a despot and criticized by others for his autocratic approach to democracy. Examples quoted were his intolerance of political demonstrations and his restriction in the freedom of the press. Lee firmly believed, however, that the end justified the means. Examples of the way he handled dissent include bankrupting opponents and the use of the courts to settle personal disputes. He never lost! He did not believe in open debate, but in absolute rule if the end justified it.

He announced his retirement when he reached 65 in 1988, but did not hand over power to Min Goh Chok Tong until 1990. He held the position of Senior Minister as an advisor until 2004 when he took up the position of Senior Mentor, a position created for him.

Although he was authoritarian, a strong character was what Singapore needed to pull it out of the quagmire into which it had sunk after the Japanese occupation and then its reoccupation by the British. Singapore owes him a lot, and a weaker man could not have achieved what Lee Kuan Yew did for his country.

Malaysia law minister Zaid Ibrahim resigns

A government minister in Malaysia has resigned in protest against the detention of three people over the weekend under the country's harsh Internal Security Act.

Our south east Asia correspondent, Karen Percy, reports the legal affairs minister, Zaid Ibrahim, tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, after disagreeing with the use of the act against an anti-government blogger, a journalist, and an opposition politician.

The act allows the police to detain suspects indefinitely without trial.

It is supposed to target people who are a threat to national security.

But it has been abused for political purposes. Mr Zaid told local reporters at the weekend that the cases should have been handled in the court system.

Other members of the cabinet are believed to also be concerned, which could play into the hands of the opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, who is trying to convince government members to defect and join his People's Alliance.

Malay Contractors' Involvement In Iskandar Malaysia Negligible, Says Association

Malay Contractors' Involvement In Iskandar Malaysia Negligible, Says Association

JOHOR BAHARU, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- Though the 2,200km Iskandar Malaysia economic corridor was launched in 2006, the involvement of Johor Malay contractors in the development projects there is negligible.

Johor Malay Contractors' Association of Malaysia president Mahmood Amir says only a handful of the association members were involved in the development of the economic corridor as compared to the size of Iskandar Malaysia.

"Many outsiders, especially friends from other states, told me how fortunate we are (Johor Malay contractors) to have the Iskandar Malaysia project.

"I could only smile (after hearing their remarks) because what is really happening is that not many of us are involved in the Iskandar Malaysia project," he told Bernama.

Since Iskandar Malaysia, an economic corridor encompassing several districts in south Johor was launched two years ago, it has attracted RM33 billion in domestic and foreign investments.

Due to certain reasons, the Johor Malay contractors were not keen to bid for tenders for development projects in the economic corridor, Mahmood says.

Among the reasons they often lament about are not being able to understand the criteria and procedures for tenders called by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority and Iskandar Investment Berhad.

"They (local Malay contractors) don't understand the criteria and procedures required by the two agencies tasked with developing Iskandar Malaysia," he said.

Instead, Mahmood says, the Johor Malay contractors were more inclined to tender for Public Works Department projects as they were familiar with the procedures and conditions stipulated by the government agency.

Furthermore, most of the tenders called at Iskandar Malaysia involved Class "A" and "B" contractors, for projects costing millions of ringgit, whereas the majority of the 4,000 association members were Class "F" contractors.

Also, given the sluggish economic climate, he said, many of the Malay contractors in Johor were "dying" and could ill-afford to buy the tender documents to bid for development projects in Iskandar Malaysia.

"The documents cost up to RM500 for one project and they cannot afford it. Moreover, there is no guarantee they will be awarded the project," he said.

Under these circumstances, Mahmood says it was difficult to meet the target set by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman that at least 60 per cent of the infrastructure work be given to Bumiputera contractors.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad said recently the Iskandar Malaysia project had not had any direct impact on local residents so far.

"This has caused Iskandar Malaysia not to be well-received by local residents and the business fraternity," added the Johor Baharu member of parliament.

-- BERNAMA

I hope, Shahrir's comments will not be seen as being naughty in the light of coming UMNO election. Labuan IBFC to expand in Asia, Mideast

Petaling Jaya: Labuan IBFC Inc Sdn Bhd, the marketing arm of Labuan Offshore Financial Services Authority, will set up offices in the Asian region and Middle East within the next 12 months.

Chief executive officer Martin Crawford said however details had yet to be finalised.

“We could be setting up an office in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. We might co-set up the office with Malaysian Industrial Development Authority or local legal firm Zaid Ibrahim & Co,” he said, adding that Labuan IBFC hoped to have a presence in the Middle East in six to eight months.

“The next office could be in Hong Kong.

“We need to convince professionals in Hong Kong that there is something Labuan could offer them,” Crawford told a media briefing yesterday.

To a question, he said Labuan IBFC was targeting the 500 top conglomerates in Asia to set up captive insurance companies in Labuan.

He said 64% of the top 500 companies in the United States had a captive insurance company. In contrast, less than 10% of the 500 top conglomerates in Asia had captive insurance companies.

Labuan IBFC also plans for roadshows in selected countries and will be advertising and developing an online resources centre.

“We are also keen to tap into newer emerging markets for offshore investment flows such as India, China and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

“We will be conducting a roadshow in Hyderabad and Mumbai in India next week,” Crawford said, adding that India had been identified as a high potential market.

Indian investors had been active in trading, mergers and acquisitions or in supporting their burgeoning information technology industry, he said.

“To date, many of these offshore investments have been routed through Mauritius or Singapore. Labuan has many advantages over these traditional jurisdictions but many Indian businessmen are not aware of this.

“Labuan is an unpolished gem that can be sold to the world. I am sure it has the potential to be a leading business and financial centre in the region once we have polished it,” Crawford said.

He said Labuan IBFC would focus on five key areas: international holding companies, private and public investment banks, captive insurance, Islamic finance and wealth management products such as expatriate pensions.

To date, Labuan IBFC has registered US$14.7bil in approved leasing transactions; US$16bil debt issuance by corporations; US$6.4bil in private funds approved; US$4.2bil in Islamic notes listed on the Labuan International Financial Exchange; US$3.8bil in non-securities capital raised via Labuan companies and US$700mil in insurance premium.

Penderhaka, Anwar, Dr Mohamad Osman,Balasubramaniam,Zaid BERSEMBUNYI.

beritadarigunung

2.

Zaid: Take human rights seriously

KUALA LUMPUR: It is time that governments including Malaysia accord serious consideration to human rights and that they are integral to human dignity, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim.

“Governments can no longer say they subscribe to the rule of law and yet compromise on the issues of human rights,” he said at a dinner he hosted for the 13th Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions.

Zaid, siapakah yang muntah atas kapal?

Blogger Berita dari gunung said...

Blogger Berita dari gunung said...

Stalled Reform Agenda

Most Malaysians are appalled by the succession of press conferences and statutory declarations hogging our headlines, but there are important lessons to be learnt.

First, the stalled reform agenda must proceed. In 2004, Abdullah Badawi promised change. He failed to deliver, suffered the consequences on March 8, and reiterated the same promises. Now we can see the extent to which our institutions – the police, the judiciary and the prosecution service in particular – have been weakened and politicised. We cannot wait for the Umno leadership battle to be resolved and the Prime Minister cannot disappoint us again. He must act and push the conservatives within the Cabinet to move forward.

Secondly, the government's credibility needs to be safeguarded. As one of the more open-minded ministers says: "credibility is something you build up. But once it's lost it's very difficult to regain." Given current pathetic levels of trust, the government has a tough job.

Thirdly, Umno needs to be brought to heel. Many of our problems are due to Umno's overwhelming influence within the administration and the inability to control powerful party members. The network of relationships linking the party, the civil service, business and the security apparatus needs to be exposed to the light of day and full media scrutiny.

"We needn't be afraid of openness." Such courage has earned Shabery the grudging respect of media practitioners."

For decades, Umno has presented itself as the saviour of the Malays and the arbiter of the national consensus. Past party's leaders such as Tun Dr Ismail and Tun Razak were wise and pragmatic, balancing out the conflicting demands of our multiracial society while delivering economic growth and prosperity.

But the party has since become middle-aged and lazy. The wheeler-dealer businessman in his black SUV has usurped the cikgu ethos. Umno warlords and their financial backers must learn they are accountable to the institutions of state: if they break the law they will suffer the consequences. This is where a more open, fair and law-abiding Malaysia are important. We need Abdullah Badawi to remain focused on this agenda. Get it right and it will be his legacy for the future. Get it wrong and nothing will save him. The institutions of state need to return to their true position – above the party.

But many in the party don't consider this to be a priority. For them it's something secondary – the kind of issue beloved of middle classes which Umno leaders felt 'betrayed' them. Well, I have news for them: we didn't 'betray' them – they betrayed us, and the culture and traditions of Umno's founders.

Whenever I discuss these issues with Umno types they'll reply – "Karim, the voters in my kawasan don't care about these things". I disagree with them: Umno's poor showing was due to its refusal to acknowledge and address core issues of justice, fairness and equality – issues that we experience across the country when 'enterprising' and 'clever' Umno leaders acquire large houses, expensive cars and go on lavish holidays.

Still, there are those in Cabinet like Zaid Ibrahim and Shahrir Samad who recognise these weaknesses and have been trying to convince their colleagues that restoring trust in institutions is a priority. Shabery Cheek, for one, has helped 'free up' the media, refreshingly saying: "We need to realise that we do have a track record and culture of service. We needn't be afraid of openness." Such courage has earned Shabery the grudging respect of media practitioners.

The face-off between Anwar Ibrahim and Najib Razak is directly attributable to the current imbalance of authority – on the one hand a severely compromised security and legal apparatus and on the other an executive beholden to no one but the party and its warlords, creating an environment riddled with corruption, slovenliness and racism.

The crisis is eating away at our national consensus, undermining our capacity to move forward at a critical juncture when focus is required to guide the nation through unprecedented inflationary turbulence. It has emboldened opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to play to the gallery, knowing that in the absence of a credible legal forum, the public becomes the ultimate arbiter of innocence or guilt.

The party of Merdeka has got to come to terms with modernity. Yes, Umno in its earlier incarnation helped bring Independence and ensured the position of the Malays within the Federation. But the party of the 1950s and 60s is no more. Fifty years on and Umno is symbolised by the extraordinary mansion in Klang. It has lost sense of propriety and service, focusing instead on its own needs. The mass of Malays and Malaysians have been forgotten. (By KARIM RASLAN/ MySinchew)

BERITADARIGUNUNG: China showed the way on the subject of reforms. China is never afraid. China put maturity in reforms. Russia is the opposite. For decades, Russia is tormented by reforms. Gorbachev is a child, cheated and naive. It takes Putin to cheer things up and place Russia higher and stronger.
Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989 is for all to learn, including Shahrir, Shabery and Zaid. Make no mistake!

Buying the earliest ticket to China as soon as "tok ketampi" video surfaced is naive and childish...., just like Gorbachev. That got nothing to do with reforms, openess etc.

Salleh Abbas, the court and the palace

"I therefore called upon Tun Salleh to openly explain the contents of the First Letter which he wrote to the Agong and the reasons for keeping silent all these years. Additionally, Tun Salleh must disclose whether he had disclosed and explained to his fellow judges about this letter to the Agong and the reaction of the Agong to his insolent letter.

The truth must come out.

Tun Salleh has demanded accountability and transparency. I now demand accountability and transparency from Tun Salleh.

I also demand from Pak Lah, Zaid Ibrahim, the Joker and Ambiga, the Lady-in-Waiting whether they were aware of this letter which Tun Salleh wrote to the Agong."

BERITADARIGUNUNG:

Grand Ballroom, JW Marriot Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

Special dinner hosted by the Malaysian Bar Council and sponsored by the Malaysian Government. Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi delivered a special address entitled “Delivering Justice, Renewing Trust“.

UPDATES: FROM ROCKY BRU

"We were NOT invited," say Judges.
It hit me while the PM was reading out his speech on renewing trust in the judiciary last Thursday: Where were the Judges?

Only two of the "Big Four" were there, both at the main table - the CJ and the President of the Courts of Appeal.

500 or more guests in the hall - including KJ and 4th Floor boy Zaki - and none of our judges were there.

How come?

I learnt over the weekend that the judges were NOT invited to the dinner hosted by the Bar Council and paid for by the Government.

The Judges are furious. They were only told about the proposed Commission the week before the dinner, towards the end of the Conference of Judges in KL.

"Zaid Ibrahim, the de facto Law Minister, attended our Conference. You'd think he would have the courtesy of telling us Judges about the JAC and the dinner," one Judge told me.

Another Judge wondered about "hidden agenda".

"We were told it'd be an 11-member Commission based on a 4:5:2 composition: the big four judges, five from the Bar Council, and two others.

"Five from the Bar? And they didn't think Judges should be consulted on the proposed reforms of the Judiciary or the formation of the Comission? What's happening here?"

Zaid will have some explaining to do. If not, the PM could well be on the way to creating a new crisis in the judiciary instead of renewing the trust in the system.

Muhyiddin tegur Zaid

Thats life, applicable in any situation........

Apology proposal not to embarass anyone, says Zaid

Apology proposal not to embarass anyone, says Zaid
PETALING JAYA, Sat: BERNAMA.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said today his proposal for the Federal Government to apologise to those victimised in the 1988 judicial crisis “should not be construed as an attempt to embarass anyone or even to undo former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s legacy”.
BERITADARIGUNUNG: zaid, dont make it a habit to announce something if the stage is "a proposal to the government". Zaid, publicity is not everything.
