UNDERSTANDING with MALAYSIAKINI: the outcome of Kuala Terengganu by election.

They have decided to give it to PAS. With Malaysiakini, after a sip of kopi pahit, I am not going too far in imagining the win, as that of Pakatan Rakyat's under Anwar. It was a clear fight between UMNO and PAS and there was no yardstick to evaluate Anwar's factor.

2. At the end of the day, do people really allow themselves to be influenced by political campaign or ceramahs? Or is political inclination a changing facade of deeper attachments?. Like a young man in search of a matured life has gone through phases. There are days when your own thoughts and inclinations are in head on collision with the traditions, political belief included.

3. For a while, I thought political swings is a little pendulum swinging at will. Political pundits will know how to disturb the stillness of the political stability because they understand the theory of equilibirium. Most walk on murky water not knowing what lies underneath.

Share the thoughts of winning and losing in a wider blogosphere.

1. Harakah: PAS menang, Abdul Wahid layak ke Parlimen!

LETS SEE IN MALAYSIAKINI: if the majority is really 7000

Oh, it wont be long before kuala terengganu will get a new representative. As Ong in Malaysiakini put a figure of 7000 majority, many would love to test the hypothesis. Who knows, it could just be true [ 'PAS to win by 7,000 majority' ].

2. When everyone has gone home late tonight, the winner will put up a bitter smile. What is he going to do as a representative? If Wan Farid is fated to be back into parliment and thus cabinet minister, he surely knows where to turn to. Farid will never stop thinking how to further develop Kuala Terengganu.

3. Excellent performance in national examinations over many years is an indication that things are well in Terengganu. Money is well spent in areas that matters most; nation building.

4. If Wahid raise up his hands tonight, then he has alot of things to do, to pacify the needs and demands of Kuala Terengganu people. Thats what i think. But after seeing the game of Tian Chua in handling lift problem of flat dwellers, i stop short of stamping my opinion that Lee Lam Thye is the last Malaysian political hero. The rest are just boys....

TERENGGANU WITH MALAYSIAKINI: the unsung heroes of political campaign

As the flock of geese crippled the jetliner, Captain Chesley B “Sully” Sullenberger III, who guided the US Airways Flight 1549 to an emergency landing in the river, just off Manhattan’s West 48th Street, was compared to David Niven. He was a real hero.

2. With Malaysiakini, lets share other relevant instances, when heroes are seldom serenaded, the backroom guys.

Unsung heroes of
Kuala Terengganu
Political Campaign.

2009/01/15

Since the announcement of the by-election candidates, Nianotieya Zaharuddin has been working tirelessly as a "receptionist" at the Tun Abdul Razak mobile clinic.
She makes sure patients are attended to by doctors at the mobile clinic, which has visited 34 voting centres in the constituency.

"It's my first time doing this and it's fun. I am not tired, although I do get sleepy at times.

"I get to help many people whatever their political leanings. I hope I can serve again," she said.

Like many others working in operation centres, Nia is among the unsung heroes helping Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh in his campaign.
The situation is similar for Nik Suhaila Megat Deraman, Wan Farid's media liaison officer.

She starts at 7am, following Wan Farid on his campaign trails and schedules appointments with the people and media.

By the time she retires for the day, it would be 3am. It has become routine for her since nomination day on Jan 6.

"It's stressful at times but also fun because I see lots of antics and learn new stuff. Of course, I get to catch up with old friends as well.

"That said, I do need a fix of chocolate every now and then for that extra boost," the former journalist said.

Just like Nia and Suhaila, Pas campaign manager Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah thrives on the excitement.

His days are long but nights are brief -- he has managed on two hours of sleep since the campaign started late last month.

As he juggles the double responsibilities as Pas candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut's representative, Wan Sukairi said organisation and spiritual sustenance are his fuel.

"Of course, it's tiring. But the best part about campaigning is when the people respond positively," the affable ustaz said.

With a day left before the showdown, these unsung heroes are oiling the machinery and working round the clock for the final dash.

WITH MALAYSIAKINI: Kuala Terengganu is extremely quiet.

The old saying goes, air tenang jangan sangka tiada buaya. I feel like sharing it with Malaysiakini on noise level in Kuala Terengganu as the election day is nearing. For the record, there are only two postings in Malaysiakini on KT by elections today.

  1. Wan Ahmad Farid says no to oil royalty debate A Terengganu-based NGO has offered to organise a debate between the two candidates on the oil royalty issue but Barisan Nasional candidate is not keen, stating that the matter has been settled
  2. KT by-election: Voting estimates analysis Specific aspects of voting are compared in relation to results in March 2008 and the anticipated outcome in Saturday’s by-election. Who is expected to win and by what margin?

2. The obvious presence of pondok polis throughout Kuala Terengganu is creating a sense of security. I suppose we cant afford to belittle security and safety even though some take it for granted. At times, the very much needed security are being tested by some quarters. Lets do flash back on MACC, as Bad [the challenger in PRU12 Rembau constituency ] submitted a list of complaints on probable corruptions just to test. We have not forgotten how the essence of national security was being tested as Bersih and Hindraf were parading the tarmac. Even I.S.A. was questioned from time to time.

3. Therefore one really has to distinguish between political talk and the reality. Anything that disturb the racial harmony has to be dealt with quickly. I.S.A. is something we can rely on to put things in order. Nobody should be scared, because the majority are just ordinary people who go on with lives, doing some jobs, raise families and be part of a larger society. Playing poker with national security is simply irresponsible.

4. A day in Kuala Terengganu is a pleasant experience. The city is clean by Malaysian standard. Pasar Payang is some kind of enterpreneurship hub for the malays. Yes, with monsoon cup lagoon, crystal mosque, hadhari retreat within the vicinity, Pasar Payang is thriving as visitors and the locals drop by to take kerpok lekor home. A visit to Noor Arfa Batik complex is a must to most malay ladies. The talk of someone getting rich out these projects is best forgotten. Terengganu is reaping benefit out of these projects now just like Melaka. Tourism. Lets not forget how Noor Arfa batik rises from tenacity of two persons, a husband and a wife with a little help by the government. Entrepreunerships are displayed in full colour in!

5. Kuala Terengganu is on capacity building now, give it some time, even Kelantan will be beaten. For now, Kuala Terengganu has to be satisfied as a stop over for long holiday trip to kelantan. I guess KT presence will be permanent on holiday maker list.

6. I saw polis berkuda the other day saddling the sandy path. It was quite a sight.

7. Malay houses are changing. The old traditional houses with spectacular nisan kayu at two ends of the roof are giving way to better houses. Some houses are simply very big. It is just a sign of better life seeping into Terengganu landscapes.

8. There was this penceramah, who lambasted some politicians for being very greedy and becoming very rich. The moment he ended his sermont, he was ushered into a nice BMW. Of course we cannot be too pricky, because politicians are just alike. Some are very rich.

9. As I crossed Pulau Kambing, the river was unusually calm. I cant remember when was the last time a bujang senang was sighted there. Anyway, the weather was rather cool almost like spring in Wales.....

10. To my opinion, Terengganu has not suffered from being over developed. The pace of development is just right and matches human capital development there. Therefore Terengganu will not fall into some other foreign hands.

11. Lets orang ganu kite decide for themselves what is good for them. Even Anwar, Khalid or Lim Guan Eng cant understand the calmness of Kuala Terengganu. Just to share, I saw a poster with Teresa Kok, Lim Guan Eng, Khalid and Anwar on it. They are quite sensible to exclude the face of Karpal Singh because he has been far too vocal on Hudud, the flagship of PAS.

Far too early, but it will not be wrong to expect Wan Farid emerging as winner.

ZORRO WITH MALAYSIAKINI: umno is dying ...

Malaysiakini topblogger, zorro was painting a gloomy picture on Umno. As he said if Day 1 is the benchmark barometer to go by, then I say that PAS will plaster UMNO convincingly. [THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR KT UMNO? | zorro]

2. Some people are serious about politics and cling to a political party like marriage, till death do us apart or sehidup semati [malay version]. That was in the old days. At times there were little whisper like "letak tunggul kayu pun boleh menang". That specifically refers to strong adherance to political party as compared to the person himself.

3. At times, people are thinking that modern folks go for personality, charisma or leadership quality as the most important prerequisite to a good representative. We may be wrong on that point as folks send a videographer to the parliament. On that instance, strong attachment to political party is still prevalent.

4. Kuala Terengganu is somewhat different. People are still mourning about their best representative for decades in late Razali. I dont suppose supporters just turn around and hate Umno or love PAS more.

TERENGGANU IN MALAYSIAKINI: Meet Azharudin Mamat aka Adam

Lets meet Azharudin Mamat aka Adam electrically with Malaysiakini by clicksharing the electric new paper, singapore on its latest entry on Kuala Terengganu by election titbit.

THE balance is so fine that any little nudge

could swing the vote in this critical by-election.

The Malays form nearly 90 per cent of Kuala Terengganu. Their vote is expected to be split evenly between the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition and opposition contender PAS.

The Chinese vote is what everyone reckons would tip the balance in the 17 Jan by-election.

Until now that is. Enter businessman Azharudin Mamat alias Adam.

He surprised everyone by putting himself forward as an independent candidate.

In the March general election, the Kuala Terengganu seat also saw a three-cornered fight involving BN, PAS and an independent candidate. PAS later claimed that it lost the seat as a result of the independent candidate splitting the votes.

Mr Azharudin, who deals in traditional medicine, said it was his right to contest in the polls, a first for him, reported liberal news website Malaysiakini.

'I am not here to split the votes. I want to win the contest,' he said.

The 46-year-old father of nine children has paid the RM10,000 ($4,200) deposit which he will lose if does not get at least 12.5 per cent of the votes.

He has also only allocated himself RM15,000 for campaigning purposes.

Mr Azharudin said he is running for office because he wants to help the poor in Kuala Terengganu.

'I want to help the poor. I've seen too many leaders making all kinds of promises but doing nothing when they won,' Bernama quoted him as saying.

He also told Malaysiakini that he intends to 'use the MP's allowance to help these people regardless of race or party'.

His task will not be easy as he will be up against representatives from two giants - BN and PAS - who could afford to spend more than him.

He also said that he was not financed by any parties to contest in the by-election.

'I am self-funded and I am doing this on my own,' he said.

11-day campaign

He will be pitted against BN's Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh of Barisan Nasional and PAS' Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut in the by-election. And he will have to endure a gruelling 11-day campaign period from today until the by-election.

His tactic: He will be using CDs.

Mr Azharudin said they would play a major role in his campaigns, adding that he would also use a lorry to travel about for his 'mobile' campaigns.

He added that he has no on-line presence - no blogs or websites - and will be relying on direct communications with his voters.

'I will be distributing 5,000 pamphlets from house to house and installing banners in strategic places,' he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, roses came to the rescue of PAS candidate Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut when meeting voters in Kampung Cina recently.

Admittedly nervous about introducing himself to the women there, Mr Wahid was wondering what to do as he did not want to shake hands with women.

He did the next best thing. He said it with roses, reported the New Straits Times.

'At first I was not so sure about greeting the women in Kampung Cina, but luckily someone handed me a bouquet of roses.

'So every time the women held out their hand, I handed them the flowers.

'It really helped me. I am considering using flowers again, but maybe not roses. They are expensive. Next time around, it might be oranges,' he said. [FULL HERE: Meet Azharudin Mamat aka Adam. But is he also Mr Spoiler? Electric New Paper]

RALLYING WITH MALAYSIAKINI: terengganu, a tight race.

The most colourful event during PRU12, must have been the true grit shown by Puan Maimon in Kuala Terengganu. A grandmother saved money for years to get into the true political action by cycling. It's not Jerit cycling, it's Perit cycling most of the time. I just want to share with Malaysiakini, what's in it in Rallying or political campaign.

2. Without Puan Maimon, the glitter is fading. Now it become a clear head-on collision between Umno and PAS. Both Umno and PAS are meant for the Malays, the bumiputera of the land. They were together once, crusading for the independence of Malaya, but they had to go separate ways for a slight difference in belief and inclination. They went on with the battle but their bounties are the same racial stock; the Malays.

3. Lets read what The sun has to say about the three of them, men with 3 labels, PAS, UMNO and an independent in a very tight race.

And they are off --- Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, PAS’s Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut and an independent candidate, businessman Azharuddin Mamat.

It is apparently such a tight race that only very few are willing to predict --- that, too, privately --- who would be hailed on Jan 17.

Most would rather give the clichéd reply that "it is too close to call."

The prize is Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency --- the jewel in Terengganu’s crown which has in it the state capital and the gleaming quarter billion ringgit touristic Taman Tamadun Islam --- won in 2004 and 2008 by the late affable Datuk Razali Ismail.

Very few seem to be in a hurry to dismiss the contest as just a fight between Umno and PAS --- the traditional adversaries --- after independent candidate octogenarian Maimun Yusof garned enough votes to give the victory to Razali in the March 8 general election.

More is at stake for the BN in this contest. After its disastrous outing in Permatang Pauh, it must win this one if it is to give credence to what its top leaders, Datuk Seri Najib Razak included, have been saying that the coalition is now on a revival course.

Defeat would give leaders of Pakatan Rakyat, the coalition of PKR, DAP and Pas, an opportunity to say that Permatang Pauh was not an exception but a continuation of what began on March 8. And Kuala Terengganu confirms it.

BN has put up what it believes to be the best possible candidate, a former advocate and solicitor, to retain Kuala Terengganu which fell to its rivals several times in the past, the latest being by PAS in 1999.

Even though Wan Farid is leader of the Kuala Terengganu Umno division, others in the party in the state say he is not the perfect candidate but they agree that he is acceptable to the various party factions, notably those linked to former menteri besar Datuk Idris Jusoh, who was snubbed from continuing as the state chief executive after the March 8 general election, and his successor Datuk Ahmad Said.

Wan Farid was former political secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and until recently was a senator and deputy home minister. And Najib, who seems to be everywhere in Kuala Terengganu, has said that should he win, he would be deputy minister again.

"Now wouldn’t you want to vote for someone who is guaranteed of becoming deputy minister rather than someone who has no chance at all of becoming one," Najib told a large gathering of party workers when launching the BN electionary machinery for the Kuala Terengganu by-election at the Taman Tamadun Islam convention centre on Monday evening.

Of course, Wahid, the assemblyman of Wakaf Mempelam, cannot be deputy minister even if the voters of Kuala Terengganu decide that they have had enough of being represented by an Umno or BN man.

But the fact that he has been state assemblyman since 1990 must say something about the man, a former teacher.

It is not going to be easy for the BN and Najib has admitted as much.

But he has managed to elicit promises from the various factions to work together at least for this by-election. At the evening function on Monday, the MB was there and so was Idris. An elder of Terengganu Umno and MB for 25 years, Tan Sri Wan Mokhtar Ahmad, was also there.

Najib’s speech that evening was a bit of everything --- pep talk, warning and even a little public washing of dirty linen. Wan Farid, seemingly a little elitist in his attitude towards the common folk --- a common complaint, it seems --- was reminded to be a little more humble.

It is not going to be plain sailing for PAS as well. While Wahid, an eleventh hour choice, is well-known and popular, it is mostly in his state constituency of Wakaf Mempelam.

Why he was chosen --- days after Wan Farid had already began campaigning --- when it was known that the candidate would be a toss between Terengganu PAS commissioner Datuk Mustafa Ali and Batu Burok assemblyman Dr Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi only the top echelon of PAS knows.

Everyone knows that PAS, too, has problems but Hadi was only willing to say that the choice of Wahid was divine inspiration. [Tight race in Kuala Terengganu]

WITH MALAYSIAKINI: the oil royalty and livelihood of Terengganu folks.

A malaysiakini topblog posted an article challenging Wan farid to clarify the possible leak in oil royalty. The person is none other than the PKR Pemuda himself, Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin [Pemuda PKR cabar Farid jelaskan ketirisan wang royalti | Shamsul Iskandar] . I do find clumsy sometimes when faced in a similar situation. Someone poke at your belly and you have to jump in reaction. Frequent pokes on the same spot will allow your consciousness to take over. Farid undoubtedly knows how to handle.

2. Lets go down the memory lane for a while. The days when Wan Mokhtar was the icon being the naib presiden of umno and the menteri besar. Wan Mokhtar for decades had managed to ward off challenges from Hadi and his group.Hadi being young and agressive failed to shake Wan Mokhtar. Then came the late 90's black eye of Anwar that failed to see light beyond a meter. Some blamed Wan Mokhtar's overstay. But Hadi scrambled up the throne, and spoiled the reign. I wouldnt be wrong to share the feelings of many, that Hadi is simply not of statesman pedigree.

3. Their high pitched ceramahs, trained future leaders in an unconventional way. When in power, the intricities of a government is way too much. Then a sensible politician, Mustapha Ali jump in to save face, dragging feet to end their tenure. Somehow it is easier for PAS to play opposition role in retrospect.

4. It was common knowledge then that roads in Terengganu were of highest quality. Even a blind will notice the difference the moment he crossed Terengganu boundary on road. A higher quality road means higher cost. But they deserve it with a little help from oil royalty. That was many years ago during Wan Mokhtar's era.

5. It was common knowledge too that Terengganu boys and girls enjoyed freedom in access into higher education. There was only two yayasans rich enough to help every boys and girls. One is yayasan sabah and the other is yayasan terengganu. So, they enjoyed the freedom of equity in education. Terengganu boys are patriotic lot, so visible when they invite friends for a makang here and overseas. Yayasan Sabah is not as rich now.

6. No wonder, Terengganu keep producing the best result in national exams. Good access by roads, big help from state government on educations and their shrewd patriotism of course.

7. Someone was saying the other day that alot of oil money was cleverly invested through Yayasan Terengganu for decades. It is a good move indeed. That is much better that to throw notes to everyone to make them happy as what PAS under Hadi tried to do. Things has to be long term, beyond our days to sustain. In a way Wan Mokhtar through his conventional and conservative thinking and group synergy manage to put Terengganu on a good alignment.

8 Lets forget about Hadhari and Monsoon Cup for a while. Not many questioned the benefits coming from the two. It is like money generating money for generations down the road. The issue centred on the leak. I remembered Hassan Marican's reply when pressed on Petronas strategies. He said there are things in business best kept secret, otherwise we lose the advantage.

9. In a way, Terengganu is like Sarawak, they ride on peacefully in good hands. Whereas Sabah, has lost their oppurtunity to rise even higher. A quick fix approach fails most of the time to develop land and man. Better things is in the horizon not necessarily within our life time. On that point, even Nizar, Ngeh, and Nga fail miserably.

Good luck Terengganu, your kerpok lekor is nice and juicy! I wont forget to drop by Kemamang via Kuantang soon. I will get kerpok lekor at Paso Payang.....

POSTERING WITH MALAYSIAKINI: not altantuya again.

I cant imagine PKR is going to use that tactic again, altantuya murder poster!. It is really an old case/issue and to a certain extent the case has been adequately treated by the court. Syed Jaymal posted a news item on the said issue in Malaysiakini. [PKR Youth members arrested in KT from Malaysiakini]

2. Altantuya murder is an ongoing criminal case handled by our own court. It has always been that way for a long long time. The court will handle cases and lawyers will fight it out. In some places a native court/tribunal will come in to solve disputes. Meanwhile everyone just has to keep mum over the issue, otherwise we are seen as meddling. Those with legal minds will say in contempt of court, or simply disrespectful of the court, its process and its invested power.

3. In an earlier post, I mentioned about someone poking at your belly. For the first time, you will jump according to your "geli" resistance. But if the guy keep poking a hundred times over months, you get used to it, your consciousness will take over. You may not even react or at worst, you give the guy a swing at slightest indication.

4. Lets tease our memory for a minute. It was Ijok's by election when PKR used the very same issue to the maximum. Sensible folks were wide eyed, wondering what the hell PKR and Anwar were so happy and jumpy about playing the issue or rather the scandal. Then our wicked mind began to understand the reason why. It is all about Anwar wanting to be the next Prime Minister, and too bad Najib is in the way. Therefore Najib has to be eliminated. But Ijok by election is never Najib's baby.

5. If campaign is very much issue/scandal based, I have to be frank with Anwar and his supporters that they soon will find themselves irrelevant. The worst part is, the same issue has been played far too often ever since Ijok seeked re election. People get bored, and the police get angry and soon everyone will get pissed. A few friends were damn sore, when Bad [the Rembau candidate PRU12] showed his political maturity in testing MACC. MACC to them is fun! Another poke at the belly?

6. Meanwhile Nizar is not too certain what is to become of freeholding of leased lands. A reader had submitted a long article in Utusan Malaysia 5.1.2009, putting historical and legal light into it. I tell you, it will not go down well with those who really understand about land matters and historical attachment. I am not too sure what the fellow folks from Lekir and Pasir Panjang think about it.

5. To be fair lets be respectful to law and regulation. Too much street talk will not do much good to us Malaysian and at worst we are seen as playing and toying with the law. That is not good. It is like driving at 180km/hr and intermittently look back if any patrol car will chase you. One cant be too committed with Jew's saying "everything is fine in chaos" as they bulldozed Ghaza to shambles.

6. Lets read what is Syed hamid Albar reaction to the arrest: 'Five people were arrested and released on police bail,' said Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar, adding that the five were suspected of defamation.

'You can't breach the law. If they spread criminal defamation the police should take action. In a democratic system we should act with responsibility,' he told a press conference. Opposition members arrested Straits Times, Singapore

  • Jumlah keseluruhan pengundi: 80,325
  • Melayu: 88.14 %
  • Cina: 10.94 %
  • India: 0.65 %
  • Lain-lain: 0.27 %

Proton suspends Terengganu dealer (updated)

PETALING JAYA: Proton has suspended one of its dealers in Terengganu for allegedly using non-genuine spare parts, overcharging and repairing cars without recording it in the carmaker's online warranty system.

Proton Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed told reporters at a press conference on Sunday that the company would also be cooperating with the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) while conducting its own investigations into the matter.

"If the dealer is implicated in any wrongdoing, we will not hesitate to terminate the dealer's services," he said, adding that the dealer worked under EON (Edaran Otomobil Nasional) - one of Proton's super-dealers.

The national carmaker began its own investigation into the state government's claims on the high cost of maintaining the 16 Proton Perdana V6 Executive cars previously used by Terengganu executive councillors.

Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said had earlier said that the state had purchased 14 Mercedes E200 Kompressor cars at RM3.43mil to replace its Proton Perdana V6 Executive fleet in a move to "cut cost."

He said apart from the dealer being suspended, Proton also found that only 35 of the 67 Proton Perdanas bought by the state government were being sent to authorised workshops. It was found that 93% of the RM1,071,669 (cost that was reported in the media) was spent outside of the Proton service system.

"If a car is taken to an unauthorised workshop and non-genuine parts are used, there are bound to be problems. Putting in non-genuine parts only compounds the problem.

"Furthermore, if repairs to a car are done outside the Proton warranty system, there is no way the company would be able to know what is going on."

Syed Zainal Abidin said preliminary investigations into the matter found that there was overcharging and second hand-parts being sold as genuine parts.

"In some instances there was also 'over-servicing' of the car," he said, adding that the average maintenance cost of a Proton Perdana was RM2,373 per year.

Moving forward, Syed Zainal Abidin said the company would be offering all state governments a free audit of their fleet of Proton cars to determine if they were being properly maintained.

"We may also suggest to the state governments which service branches, and not dealers, they should send their car to for maintenance so this kind of problem can be avoided."

When asked if other states could be having the same problems, he said it could not be discounted.

Still using Mercs
Meanwhile, Terengganu state executive council members and senior state government officers would continue using the Mercedes cars pending completion of the ACA investigation, Ahmad Said said.

The ACA had taken the Proton Perdana cars that were used by the state executive councillors and officers, he was quoted by Bernama.

"So the executive council members and officers will have to use the Mercedes ... the prime minister had also said that (we) can use the Mercedes cars once in a while," he told reporters at a dinner with state Umno leaders here on Saturday night.

State Tourism and Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Za'abar Mohd Adib arrived at the Malaysia Flora Fest 2008 in Johor Baru on Saturday in one of the new Mercedes cars, Bernama said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had earlier said that the Terengganu government could keep the Mercedes Benzes, but only for use by its guests and not for the state exco members and its senior officers.

Persepsi Halim PAS terhadap Ahmad Said.

BPR akan ajar Ahmad Said?

Harakah.

Ketua Dewan Pemuda PAS

Kalau beberapa ahli UMNO ingin menjilatnya, biarkan mereka. Tiada guna menghalang..

Dr. Mahathir: Speaks up on Rulers and politicians

Oleh Tun Dr. Mahathir MohamadA Concerned Malaysian has expressed his worry over the role being played by Sultans in the appointment of the Mentri Besar.

His Royal Highnesses have clearly refused to take the advice of the Chief Minister i.e. the Prime Minister. Instead, they have chosen on their own a member of the state legislature to head the Government.

We hear a lot of opinions on the propriety of the action by the Sultan. Some say he has the right to do this while others point out that as a constitutional ruler, he could not do this.

The Constitution says that the Ruler or Head of State must choose the elected member who enjoys the support of the majority of members in the legislative body to be the Prime Minister or the Mentri Besar. Subject to this provision, the Ruler it is who chooses and appoints the Prime Minister or Mentri Besar.

The Prime Minister, as Prime Minister, has no role in the choice of the State Mentri Besar or Ketua Menteri. His naming of candidate who should be the Mentri Besar is purely a party matter. Obviously, if the State is captured by the Opposition Party, he cannot name the candidate.

However, if the Ruler chooses someone who does not enjoy majority support, he could be deposed at a sitting of the legislative body through a vote of "no confidence".

After that, another member can be appointed by the Ruler to take his place. But if for some reason, there is no other candidate or the candidate with majority support is considered unsuitable by the Ruler, a new Government cannot be formed. The Ruler may then dissolve the legislative body and a new election may be held.

This new election may lead to the same impasse. The Ruler may not like the member with majority support.

However, it should be noted that this kind of thing had never happened during the premiership of the four previous Prime Ministers. Concerned Malaysians should wonder why.

Is it just that the particular Ruler is being difficult, unwilling to accept the principles of democracy, wanting to return to feudalism and the absolute authority of the monarch?

I do not think so. There must be a reason why the Ruler refuses to accept the candidate named by the party. But the Ruler chooses not to reveal the reasons and indulge in public debates. He merely expresses his displeasure by refusing to do what normally the Rulers would do.

Concerned Malaysians must ask what has the particular candidate done which is so wrong that it incurs the displeasure of the Ruler.

There are lots of talks in the town. Terengganu is blessed with petroleum deposits. It should get 5% of the total earning from oil production. The Federal Government; fearing the previous PAS government might use this money wrongly had withheld payment.

But when the Barisan Nasional (BN) regained Terengganu the money, now called "Wang Ehsan", was lavishly spent by the Federal Government on Terengganu. It is not a small sum. Over these years "Wang Ehsan" totalled several billion.

We know that since the BN regained Terengganu in 2004, all kinds of projects have been developed in Terengganu. This includes The Monsoon Cup, luxury housing for sale to foreigners, Crystal Mosque and theme park, university, etc. Some of these projects are very good but many are totally unnecessary and wasteful.

But what the Terengganu people are saying is that all these mega projects costing billions of Ringgit have been contracted out to people outside Terengganu. Terengganu contractors got practically nothing.

But additionally, they say the contracts all went to one person and they are suspicious that behind this person are members of the first family. The rumours also say that the previous Mentri Besar was responsible for these things happening and of course, they think that he might have benefited financially.

The rumours went on to say that the Prime Minister might have influenced the Mentri Besar into doing wrong things. These are all rumours. It will be quite impossible to prove anything as the perpetrators are skilled in hiding themselves.

This is not good for a Government keen to abolish corruption and be transparent. To clear its name, an investigation should be made.

But the public is leery of investigations by Government agencies and departments. Even Royal Commissions are not highly regarded. The people believe, not true of course, that the Government has been interfering with the work of the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), the Police and the Attorney General (A-G)'s Chambers. The say this is borne out by the results of investigations by these agencies.

When a Deputy Minister was accused of accepting money for the release of a detainee, the A-G said there was no case because the detainee said he did not give any money to the Deputy Minister. It is so easy. If you have a case involving someone, all the enforcement agencies need to do is to ask him whether he was involved. If he says "no", then there is no case.

For some reason, judges are finding that people accused of murder are not guilty because of insufficient evidence by the police. Yet people who are totally not involved in a case, who were not accused of any misdeeds and who did not appear in court at all and been given a hearing are found guilty and publicly condemned.

The public cannot be blamed for not having faith in Government agencies doing investigations. The public cannot be blamed for suspecting cover-ups by the Government or worse still the Government may be using these enforcement agencies to threaten people.

To clear its good name, the Government should get credible foreign agencies to do the investigation. Of course, they must be given full access to the documents etc.

Now my detractors are going to say I did worse things when I was Prime Minister. Well, if that is so, let us have the foreign agencies investigate me also. I am aware that people are looking into possible misdeeds by me during my 22 years so as to threaten me and ask me to shut up. So far they have not found anything.

Not only have I not taken anything that was not due to me while I was Prime Minister but I have given back to the Government and the people everything that I had received as gifts during my tenure of office.

The Government had offered me land in Kedah and Langkawi and I had refused to accept. I have a 5-acre plot in Putrajaya which I paid for even though the Government was offering it to me free.

Unless there is a frame-up, I think there should be nothing to pin on me. Even other accusations against me, including the dismissal of judges, were not my doing and I do not feel obliged to apologise. Ask the Tribunal to apologise.

The person asking that the Government should apologise for what happened to Tun Salleh Abbas may have forgotten that as President of the Muslim Lawyers Association, he fully supported the action that was taken. He castigated the Bar Council for condemning Tun Hamid Omar over the dismissal of judges. Now he wants to be more correct than correct. I wonder why.

Menteri Besar Terengganu

Berita TV sebentar tadi memberi gambaran bahawa Terengganu sedang bergelora.
