GE13: Mukhriz sworn in as Kedah MB

ALOR SETAR: Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir has been sworn in as the 10th Kedah Mentri Besar.
Mukhriz, 49, took the oath of office at Istana Anak Bukit here yesterday in front of Kedah Council of Regency chairman Tan Sri Tunku Annuar Sultan Badlishah and council members Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah and Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Sultan Abdul Halim.
Also present were his parents, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Ali, as well as his wife Datin Norzieta Zakaria and the newly-elected representatives from Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat.
Mukhriz, who is Kedah Barisan deputy chairman and Ayer Hitam assemblyman, took over from Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak of PAS after Barisan regained Kedah by winning 21 of the 36 state seats.
It is the second time that the son of a former prime minister was made a mentri besar in the country, after Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Najib, who is the son of second prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak, was appointed Pahang mentri besar from 1982 until 1986.

KEDAH WITH MALAYSIAKINI: Where is Arumugam

In old text books,

Malaysian characters were exemplified by Ahmad, Tong Seng and Ramasamy. Other names were added to cater for gender balance, such as Aminah, Sarojini and Mei Li. As kids grew older and strong enough to venture beyond the perimeter, more fancy names appeared such as Mohd Nasrul Haq, Tony Chua, Nashatul Alia and Fred Fernandez.

2. Arumugam is an old name, of course as old as the man himself. Bukit Selambau assemblyman, YB Arumugam has gone missing. Close friends claimed he had left for Chennai, India, with a woman and a child. But he left behind a resignation letter and a statutory declaration as appendix. He was a man in a hurry, so a third person is required to take the resignation letter to the right person.

3. The content of statutory declaration was basically allegations as back-up for him resigning. Earlier Anwar admitted that Arumugam came and discussed with him about the matter. Now, with Arumugam nowhere to be found, the effect will be very damaging.

4. I wish life could be alot simpler, during days when a 30 cent per cup of cendol lasted the whole afternoon and when we have standard titles as Ane, Achi, Apek, Nyonya, Pak Cik and Mak Cik to ease us into the multi-cultural society of Malaysia. We survived, but can the younger ones?

Where do we go from now? And will Arumugam return not only to face the political bloodshed but to taste the the famous cendol?

PKR WITH MALAYSIAKINI: A mix-up, not a scandal

A sudden
burst of unexpected happenings adds to the political crisis. As Perak is ready for a swap of government, Bukit Gantang lost its MP and Bukit Selambau ADUN V Arumugam quit PKR.

2. A PKR leader said, Bt Selambau case is just a mix-up, definitely not a scandal. Meanwhile attempts to contact Arumugam have been unsuccessful.

PKR supreme council member Datuk Johari Abdul has described the personal problems faced by V. Arumugam as not a scandal but a misunderstanding.

He said the problems were linked to the legal status of Arumugam’s “second wife.”

“A non-Muslim man cannot have more than one wife under the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act 1976 unless he divorces his first wife.

“Arumugam married his second wife some eight or nine years ago by religious rites,” said Johari.

He said Arumugam had not registered the customary marriage because he was still legally married to his first wife of 19 years.

Asked whether Arumugam’s resignation was related to a memorandum that had been submitted to the Kedah Sultan alleging he had insulted the palace by bringing his “second wife” to official functions, Johari, who is also MP for Sungei Petani said:

“To me, this is all just a misunderstanding that has been triggered by certain parties to create uncertainty.”
