PERMATANG PAUH: Malaysia's Anwar wins Parliament seat
The Election Commission announced that Anwar had won 31,195 of the estimated 47,000 votes cast in the election Tuesday in this semi-rural district in the northern state of Penang.
His rival, Arif Shah Omar Shah of the governing National Front coalition, got 15,524 votes. A third candidate got 92 votes.
His victory strengthens his campaign to topple the government and become the next prime minister even though he is facing charges of sodomizing a male aide.

latest: Final EC tally - Anwar got 31,195 votes, Arif Shah, 15,524, Hanafi, 92. Anwar won with a majority of 15,671. Anwar's wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, won the seat with a 13,388 majority at the March 8 general election. ...
PERMATANG PAUH, Malaysia (Reuters) - Anwar Ibrahim scored a big victory in a key Malaysian by-election on Tuesday, a leading news portal said, enabling the country's best known opposition politician to challenge for power.
Anwar, whose campaign to win the seat vacated by his wife has been dogged by new charges of sodomy, has said he will start talks with MPs from the governing Barisan Nasional coalition to initiate a confidence vote to topple the government.
Influential news portal Malaysiakini (www.malaysiakini.com) reported that Anwar had won by 16,210 votes over his challenger from Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).
Anwar's party had already claimed he was "far ahead".
Political analysts had said he needed to win by at least the 13,388 vote margin his wife achieved when she contested the seat in March's general election. The official result is due at around 9 p.m. (2 p.m. EDT).
Victory had been widely predicted for the man who was once deputy prime minister and seemed destined to become UMNO leader and prime minister.
Anwar's meteoric rise to power ended abruptly when he was imprisoned in the late 1990s on what he says were trumped up sodomy and corruption charges.
Anwar denies the new sodomy charges made by a 23-year old male aide and says if he wins power he will sweep away economic and social privileges for ethnic Malays in education and the civil service, policies he endorsed when in power. Continued...

Words are Weapons in Permatang Pauh
ANWAR'S BY-ELECTION BID FOR POWER
In getting the crucial Malay vote...
Words are Weapons
THE arrowed barbs flew swiftly and fluently.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim used these words in a rally in Seberang Jaya recently: 'bangang' (stupid), 'bahlol' (foolish), 'bodoh' (idiot), 'celaka' (scoundrel) and 'sial' (damned).
In another rally, Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin described Mr Anwar as power-crazy, a hypocrite and a sellout.
The words are meant mainly for the Malays as this is what the battle for Permatang Pauh has become - the fight for the Malay vote. With the Indians and Chinese expected to vote for Mr Anwar, the Malay fence-sitters are seen as crucial.
And the weapon of choice in the battle - words - emotional, hurtful and personal.
Mr Anwar rarely used such strong words in his speeches before, but he has changed his style as seen in the rally a few days ago.
Mr Anwar told his audience that he had to resort to using such words because 'the Permatang Pauh people are a different lot', reported Bernama.
'They can't speak kindly and gently. They don't understand. To make them understand, I have to speak like this,' he said to his audience, who included children.
However, at another rally a few days later, Mr Anwar apologised to the audience for the use of offensive words and language.
'Azizah told me not to be so harsh,' he said referring to his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is PKR president.
Mr Anwar will face Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah and Hanafi Mamat, of Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia in the contest for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat.
The seat became vacant when Dr Wan Azizah resigned as the member of parliament to make way for her husband to contest the seat.
Mr Anwar's rivals are no slouches in the word department either.
Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin who is campaigning for the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate called Mr Anwar hypocrite, reported the New Straits Times.
'If PKR is in power for the next five years, I'm sure they can sell the country. Anwar is a hypocrite of the highest order,' he told a rally.
And of course out came the bogeyman to swing the Malay vote - the US.
'He would also agree with US intentions to set up a naval base in Sabah. I obtained all this information from very reliable sources,' Mr Khairy said.
'Power-crazy'
Spewing accusations against Anwar at another rally, he described Mr Anwar as power-crazy, reported the Edge.
But is the Malay vote so crucial that both sides are willing to sink to such depths?
The Star newspaper's Joceline Tan analysed it this way.
She said as the Chinese and Indians have not returned to the BN, Malay voters who have not decided will determine the margin of win for Mr Anwar.
These voters, she said, are still open to campaign persuasion and propaganda.
'The conventional wisdom is that fence-sitters or the swing group usually make up 30% of any voting group.
'But this by-election is not the usual election. It is complicated by issues of who will be Prime Minister, another round of sodomy allegations against Anwar and Saiful swearing on the Quran,' she wrote.
The PKR side insists that Malay voters 'tak makan' or have not swallowed the implications of Saiful's testimony.
But PAS central committee member Dr Mujahid Yusof told the Star: 'We're still not sure of the impact. Morality is a serious thing to the Malays and Saiful did swear on the Quran and he did it in a mosque.'
PAS is planning to capture the fence-sitters by bringing in its three ulama superstars, party president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang, Mursyidul Am Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat and famous spiritual healer Datuk Dr Haron Din.
They are depending on their ulama leaders to provide the Islamic arguments to sort out the sodomy and swearing issue, reported the Star.
Ms Tan wrote: 'Mr Anwar's aim for a bigger majority hinges on the Malay vote and he is very worried about this line of campaigning. He has repeatedly told his audiences that he is a real Malay as well as a Malaysian who stands up for all races.'
Perhaps the most telling quote about the Malay vote came from a Chinese Permatang Pauh voter who spoke with news website Malaysian Insider.
'Because this is a Malay seat. If Anwar wins by more than 20,000 votes, it will mean that the Malays here are anti-Umno.'.
Should that happen, it would be a big blow to the present Umno-led Barisan government.click here Words are Weapons

Anwar Faces Malaysia Vote With Shaky Alliance As Sex Case Looms
Aug. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, fighting criminal charges of having illegal sex with a man, probably will win a seat in parliament today. His plan to topple Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi may not be so easily accomplished.
``Don't underestimate this by-election,'' Anwar said yesterday. The district of Permatang Pauh's 58,459 voters ``will determine history.''
Emboldened by victories in March elections, Anwar has pledged to take power by Sept. 16 by attracting ruling-coalition lawmakers to join his three-party alliance, which promises to scrap Malaysia's system of preferences for ethnic Malays.
Abdullah has tried to bolster his United Malays National Organisation-led coalition, in power since independence in 1957, by wooing an Islamist member of Anwar's alliance with government positions. Abdullah's party argues that eliminating the preferences would threaten Islamic unity in the multiracial and multireligious country.
Anwar's coalition of secular rights activists and Islamists ``was a rather unholy alliance from the start,'' said Ooi Kee Beng, an analyst at Singapore's Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Keeping it together is ``is a much bigger challenge than the sodomy'' charge.
Anwar led his People's Justice Party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party and the secular Democratic Action Party to power in five of Malaysia's 13 states in the March elections. They fell 30 seats short of ousting Abdullah's coalition from the 222-seat federal parliament.
Islamic State
PAS, as the Islamic party is known, wants Malaysia to be an Islamic state. The DAP, pointing to the almost 40 percent of the population who are Christians, Buddhists and Hindus, opposes that. Despite their differences PAS and DAP leaders have appeared at rallies for Anwar's campaign and said they are committed to their alliance.
``I'm not disputing the fact that there are issues to be resolved,'' Anwar said at a press conference yesterday. ``But what is paramount is that we are here together as a team.''
Polling stations in the district open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. local time. Results are expected by 6 p.m. Arif Shah Omar Shah, the 52-year-old candidate for the UMNO-led coalition, and independent Islamist Hanafi Hamat, 61, are the other contenders.
Anwar's Birthplace
The district, where Anwar was born 61 years ago, elected him to parliament four times when he was an UMNO member. His lowest vote share was 70 percent.
His wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, won the seat three times while Anwar was ineligible for office due to earlier convictions on charges of sodomy and interfering with police inquiries. The earlier sodomy conviction was overturned in 2004. His wife vacated the seat last month so he could compete in today's election to reclaim it.
Anwar says the new sodomy charge and earlier one are both part of conspiracies to prevent him from taking power. The government insists he will have a fair trial.
It is a crime in Malaysia for men to have sex with each other under a law that bars sodomy, defined as ``carnal intercourse against the order of nature.'' Violations are punishable by as much as 20 years in prison.
``Anwar's name is tainted,'' Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said at an UMNO rally two days ago in the district. ``Is this the kind of person we want as a leader?''
A video of Anwar's 23-year-old accuser swearing on the Koran that the politician sodomized him has been screened regularly at UMNO's headquarters in the district, 370 kilometers (230 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur.
Voters rejected similar character attacks on Anwar in the March elections, Ooi said, predicting a victory for him. ``If Anwar loses this, he's lost everything,'' Ooi said.

Permatang Pauh 10: Terakhir
Permatang Pauh 9: Untuk apa?
Dan Shahrir sekadar melepas geram, sedang Anwar mahu jadi Perdana Menteri, by hook or by crook.
Nasib masyarakat majmuk dijadikan bahan ujian esuk 26hb Ogos 2008.
Terima kasih.

Permatang Pauh 6: Bila Anwar merobek projek mega.
Bukan kali pertama Anwar merobek projek Mega.
Tanpa memberi huraian mendalam beliau berkata kerajaan perlu membela kebajikan rakyat terlebih dahulu.
People take things for granted.
Seolah Ezam bercakap kosong.....

Permatang Pauh 4: Seducing in surrender
There are news reports on 40 Government MPs ready to jump ship, the moment Anwar Ibrahim wins the Permatang Pauh by election on August 26. The art of seduction is not only important when you want to attract and conquer your (secret) lover . Seduction is an art that every couple should learn to make love grow. Seduction is also an art to get what you most desire.
Saiful Bukhari Azlan in his short tenure as Anwar's assistant, knew in details about the wooing and seduction by the greatest political lover. The MPs wooed then was not as high as 40, but of course the number could have swelled through the skill and power of local political Don Juan.
Surrender is not about giving up. Its about giving in to persistent persuasion which only great lover will understand.
"What kind of man is this Don Juan Tenorio?", asks Leo Weinstein in his monograph on the Don Juan legend, "Why does he bend all his efforts to deceive women?. . .

Permatang Pauh 3: Seducing with the end in mind.
Stephen R. Covey rightly used "Begin with the End in Mind" as the second habit in his famous THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE. Permatang Pauh by election demonstrates the application of Covey's principle.
I suppose Anwar has been viewing the light at the end of his political tunnel. It is not a recent occurance. He has been visualizing the light at the end of the tunnel, the moment he tasted the sweetness of street fighting. As always street fightings are brutal and nobody care about the noble cause, who is right and who is wrong. What matters most is winning and of course winning is not always unscatched.
Understanding the current trend of Malaysian politics now, the most glaring is the habitual tendency to vote for opposition amongs town folks and youngsters. And any reasonable person cannot explain what other reason for bringing the photographer of lingamgate into Dewan Rakyat. Anwar understand this well because he has been orchestrating the whole thing. He did so because he had unsconsciously been putting Covey's habit 2 into practice. He anchored the whole campaign strategy on this fulcrum "publicy and sympathy"
Peculiarity shown by Anwar is his silence towards Abdullah. His fiery critics has always been towards Najib. Raja Petra known to many as Anwar's ally, used Statutory Declaration to implicate Najib in Altantuya on going case. Ligamgate is seen as an effort to discredit Tun Mahathir and judges in his era. I reserve my judgement on whether to see major judicial reforms as the end in mind. Otherwise how would we explain the sudden quietness on PKR and government sides when open forum organised by Bar Council has to be called off by force so to speak.
Najib as Anwar's political target is obvious. If there is anyone at all to stop Anwar's premiership avalanche, it has to be Najib with enough strength, ability and stature. Najib has so far been able to keep his cool and not to retaliate in obvious manner. Najib is too strong to play the street game.
There is also a resonable silence on Khairy. Critics flying from both sides are mild at best. Everyone in Malaysia knows it was Khairy that facilitate Anwar's quick departure to Germany upon jail release. There is understandable bond between the two, and the extent of their collaboration and relationship is anybody's guess. For all we know, both are very ambitious and aggresive. Who knows, a secret pact has been signed and sealed.
Many raise their eyebrows when Anwar went hiding in the Embassy of Turkey. A writer noted that at that moment Anwar exhibited two contrasting images , now conquering, now vulnerable. For a split second, many quickly assume his guilt. Otherwise why hiding? Knowing Anwar, his aim is nothing more than to maximise the effect in gaining sympathy worldwide. America noticiably show strong support on Anwar and for that reason it reinforces the on going accusation on him as being America's spy or puppet.
Malaysian witness the extravaganza behind PKR's campaign in 1999 general election. Definitely vast amount of money has to be mobilised for election campaign. Then it ties well with Ezam's accusation that Anwar as Finance Minister has awarded projects, a billion ringgit to something like 15 kontraktor wibawa. To Ezam, all 15 are Anwar's cronies. To general Malaysians, cronism is nothing new, Anwar is not a saint after all, especially after being charged on sodomy twice during his political pursuit. Ezam also questioned the whereabout of 6 boxes of coruption secrets.
Many notice Anwar's natural tendency to go to the street. He is a street fighter and fight causes best known to street people. His closest counterpart will be Wech Walesa. Street fighters seldom make it through to be an effective Prime Minister or President. But of course they will be remembered somehow.
Karpals harping on Saiful's swearing as contempt of court, raise many eyebrows as to his credentials. But somehow sodomy issue would be best left aside, it is for the court to decide.
Seeking help from former presidents of Indonesia and Filipina, will be seen as outside interference as bad as Al Gore rude remarks years ago. Both Gus Dur and Estrada are not real president material, and are most forgotten and become jokes of their wayward tendencies.
Asian stocks are closed mostly down on Monday amidst jitters of political uncertainty in several asian countries including Thailand and Malaysia. This happens with the backdrop of Covey's second habit seducing with the end in mind
And of course lets see another Asian country being seduced and rammed to the ground along with million souls just to satisfy the art of crafting the second habit. And Permatang Pauh is just a plane ride away.

The Vietnam War had a profound impact on the United States. Though begun with a small contingent of advisors, the conflict escalated from 1964 through 1968. More and more American soldiers and resources poured into Vietnam. Unlike Korea, Americans faced an unconvenional enemy in a war without front lines, where objectives were obscure and the danger contstant. Million dead.....
I place 3 interesting quotes for us to ponder:-
"No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now." --Richard Nixon
"You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours, but even at those odds, you will lose and I will win." --Ho Chi Minh
"It became necessary to destroy the town in order to save it." --Unidentified U.S. army Major
