Malaysia's main opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim, today left the Turkish ambassador's house in Kuala Lumpur where he sought refuge following accusations of sodomy.
The former deputy prime minister of Malaysia said that he had been offered safe haven in the Turkish ambassador's house after arriving at the embassy last night believing the government had plans to assassinate him.
Supporters feared he might be arrested after a 23-year year-old aide filed a complaint with the police accusing Anwar of sodomising him, which is punishable in Malaysia by up to 20 years in prison.
Anwar left the embassy today after receiving a government assurance about his safety.
"I pray that enough will be done for my security," Anwar said before climbing into his vehicle. "The new allegation is a repeat of the 1998 fiasco," he said.

Anwar fears for his safety if he surrenders
July 1, 2008
KUALA LUMPUR: The opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who has taken refuge at the Turkish embassy amid threats and sodomy accusations, has vowed to remain there until the Malaysian Government guarantees his safety.
"I need categorical assurance on my safety. You know I have previously been assaulted to near death," Dr Anwar said, referring to a beating he received after being sacked as deputy premier and being hit with sex and corruption charges in 1998.
"Sure, if they give me an assurance for my safety today, I will leave the embassy today," he said in a phone interview from the mission in the capital's centre.
But Malaysia's Foreign Minister, Rais Yatim, after meeting the Turkish ambassador, Barlas Ozener, said Turkey would ask Dr Anwar to leave its embassy as soon as possible.
Dr Anwar fled there on Sunday at the invitation of the ambassador, saying he had been threatened and feared a government assassination plot after facing "fabricated" accusations that he sodomised a male aide.
"There's two reasons why I decided to come to the embassy. It's not just for my personal safety; it's also for the stability of the nation," he said, referring to likely protests if he was arrested.
Dr Anwar said the allegations were aimed at derailing his spectacular political comeback as the figurehead of an opposition that made big gains in elections in March, and came just as he was about to re-enter parliament.
"This is their intention. You know we will announce a by-election this week. I will contest [it]; the police knew that," he said.
After he was sacked in 1998, a watershed event in Malaysian politics, Dr Anwar was convicted on sodomy and corruption charges and spent six years in jail.
He was released in 2004 when the sex charge was overturned, but the corruption conviction stands, and prevented him from holding public office until mid-April.
He is now eligible to stand for parliament, and one of the lawmakers in his Keadilan party is expected to stand aside for him.
Dr Anwar, who maintains he has the numbers to form a new government with the help of defecting legislators from the ruling coalition, said he was still on track to seize power.
"It has never been so good; they know that," he said of the UMNO party government of the Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Dr Anwar said he now had no faith in the due process of law in the country.
He said that elements in the police who were involved in the original investigation were now acting to sideline him because they feared revenge if he becomes prime minister.
"If you want to fight a political battle, do it cleanly," he said.
Yesterday he filed a defamation suit against the male aide who accused him of sodomy. Filed in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, it seeks unspecified compensation from the aide.

The Trial of Anwar
July 01, 2008
THERE is good reason to be concerned about the dramatic turn of events in Malaysia, where opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been forced to claim sanctuary in a foreign embassy after new allegations of sodomy were made against him. The local police have promised a quick investigation of the claims, made by Mr Anwar's 23-year-old aide, that he was sexually assaulted by his boss in a Kuala Lumpur apartment. But Mr Anwar, who was politically crushed when he was imprisoned on similar charges a decade ago, is adamant the latest allegations represent the desperate actions of a government under pressure. To help build the picture of a conspiracy, Mr Anwar's supporters have produced photographs of his accuser at social functions with senior government officials.
Nonetheless, the allegations against Mr Anwar dent hopes of a smooth transition of power in Malaysia after 50 years of National Front rule. These hopes have been building since the ruling coalition, dominated by the United Malays National Organisation, suffered a collapse of support in the elections held on March 8. Mr Anwar was not eligible to take part in the poll, but the ban on his running for political office expired in April. Since then, he has been manoeuvring to weaken the ruling coalition and enter parliament through a by-election, with the aim of becoming prime minister.
Mr Anwar's political success has centred on his ability to broker an unlikely stable coalition that brings together the opposition Islamist Malay party, PAS, with the civil liberty concerns of Malaysia's ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities.
Mr Anwar's People's Justice Party, or Parti Keadilan Rakyat, won 82 seats with a group of allies in the 222-seat lower house of parliament in the March 8 vote. The alliance needs 30 more seats to replace the National Front coalition, and Mr Anwar was considered well on the way to achieving this target through defections.
The charge of sodomy is punishable by 20 years in jail in Malaysia, even if it is consensual. But the charge is rarely prosecuted, and given Mr Anwar's earlier experience, it is possible to believe the campaign against him is politically motivated.
Mr Anwar was identified internationally as a successor to Malaysia's long-serving prime minister Mohamad Mahathir, but he fell out of political favour in 1988 when he challenged Dr Mahathir's handling of the economy at the height of the Asian financial crisis. Mr Anwar was sacked by Dr Mahathir, and then charged with sodomy and corruption. Mr Anwar's conviction for sodomy was overturned by the Federal Court, and he was released from prison in 2004.
The latest allegations against Mr Anwar undermine hopes that Malaysia will become a model for peaceful democratic change in the Islamic world. The fresh tensions in the country coincide with rising political and economic troubles elsewhere in the region. Thailand is still experiencing street protests against the perceived influence of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by a military coup in September 2006. And inflation is fuelling widespread political upheaval in India, Indonesia and The Philippines.
Against such a background, there were high hopes that confirmation of a healthy liberal democracy in Malaysia could help change the dynamic and political culture of Southeast Asia for the better. A re-run of the political dirty tricks campaign against Mr Anwar -- which his supporters claim is calculated to provoke street riots and allow the Government to invoke emergency powers -- has the potential to considerably set back the cause of democracy in the region. source:- http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/

Saiful was a student leader at Uniten
KUALA LUMPUR:
Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, the man who is accusing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy, was a student leader at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) for the 2006/2007 term.
The 23-year-old Saiful wrote in a reply in a blog a few months ago that he opted out of the university due to poor results and it would take another two-and-a-half years to complete his electrical course, something he did not want. He wrote that although active in student politics, he harboured ambitions to become a pilot. He took up the electrical course as he was offered a scholarship.
Saiful described himself as someone who liked to make friends, “regardless if they were ministers, opposition leaders, gangsters or even road sweepers.”

Malaysia's Anwar files suit against sodomy accusation, seeks government assurance of safety
The Associated Press
Published: June 30, 2008
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim filed a defamation lawsuit Monday against a male aide who accused him of sodomy, vowing to clear his name in the second sex scandal of his life to thrown the country's politics into turmoil.
"I went through hell before," Anwar told The Associated Press in a telephone interview, referring to the first upheaval a decade ago when he was accused of committing sodomy with his family driver and an aide.
The accusations led to his ouster as the deputy prime minister in 1998, when he was arrested and beaten up by the national police chief. A court later exonerated him.
Anwar, who recently revived his political career and is seen by some as the next prime minister, has denied the new sodomy accusation, dismissing it as a political conspiracy.
Anwar is now holed up in the Turkish Embassy, claiming he fears a government plot to kill him. He fled there early Sunday, hours after his 23-year-old male aide filed a police complaint accusing Anwar of sodomizing him.
Sodomy is punishable by 20 years' imprisonment in Muslim-majority Malaysia.
Anwar said he would not leave Malaysia or seek political asylum, but would remain in the embassy until "the government gives me a categorical undertaking for my personal safety."
"I was assaulted to near death before and my family and friends told me not to take things for granted," Anwar said. "I have every reason to suspect that it may recur again because they are more desperate now compared to 1998."
Anwar returned in spectacular fashion from political oblivion in the March 8 general elections, shepherding a three-party opposition alliance to massive gains that left the ruling National Front coalition with only a simple majority in Parliament for the first time in four decades.
He has since claimed to have persuaded dozens of government lawmakers to defect, and pledged to topple Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's administration by mid-September.
Anwar filed a defamation suit through his lawyers Monday in the Kuala Lumpur High Court, seeking unspecified compensation from his aide who made what Anwar branded as a "malicious" police complaint.
Anwar wants "to have his day in court as soon as possible and to further reinforce his position ... that this police report is a complete fabrication and is basically done as politically motivated," said his lawyer, Sivarasa Rasiah.
The developments have added to the turmoil in Malaysian politics, which last went through a major crisis in 1998 when then-Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad fired Anwar, ostensibly over accusations that he sodomized his family driver.
Anwar was sentenced to 15 years in prison on what he claimed were trumped up charges of sodomy and abusing his authority to cover up the deed. Malaysia's highest court overturned the sodomy conviction in 2004 and freed him.
But the abuse-of-power conviction barred Anwar from political office for five years. The ban ended in April, and Anwar plans to re-enter Parliament through a by-election, which would make him eligible to become prime minister.
Anwar wrote on his blog Sunday that he has been warned "that my assassination has not been ruled out" in efforts to "end to the transformational changes taking place in Malaysia."
Anwar's party said the Turkish ambassador had offered him protection. Anwar is known to be a close friend of Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak denied there was a conspiracy and said the government "can assure him of his personal safety."
"This is not a question of political persecution. This is a question of the law," he told reporters, adding the government would "never" harm a politician.

Satu permainan chess yang panjang. Dalam permainan yang panjang itu, ada orang menang dan mengaut untung. Politik tanah air jadi reality show!
Anwar puas bersandiwara. Anwar belum puas dengan politik. Nafsu Anwar menakjubkan.
Permainan chess kali ini bertukar corak. Pemburu dan mangsa. Peluru sudah siap berisi. Tangan sudah menggigil. Permainan chess dalam rimba politik. Mangsa jadi keliru.

The following police report was made on 28 June 2008 at 5.45 PM by Mohd Saiful Bukhari bin Azlan, who turns 23 next week (i/c no 850706-01-5687):
Majikan saya Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim - Ketua Umum PKR."
Logically, people who pooh-poohed RPK's statutory declaration and saw it as a political ploy will pooh-pooh this police report and see unseen hands, too. And vice versa, right?
I never believed Anwar was a sodomite, just as I don't believe Rosmah was there at the scene of Altantuya's murder. My belief, however, makes no difference to the people who believe that Anwar is indeed a sodomite and to the people who have already made up their minds that Najib must be linked to the Mongolian's murder.
There are fanatics among us today and we live in difficult times.
My advice (to those who aren't yet fanatics) is still the same: let the police investigate the claim. If it goes beyond that, let the courts hear the case.
After all, don't we have a more credible judiciary now? A more credible police force? A more courageous civil society movement? A freer and more democratic Press under Prime Minister Badawi.
Badawi says his Government has nothing to do with the sodomy police report against DSAI. He says he was shocked. Click here to read his shock. And Anwar says the police report by his private assistant was total fabrication, here.

ANWAR IBRAHIM: took refuge at the Turkish Embassy on Sunday.
Malaysia's Anwar seeks refuge after sodomy claim
By Jalil Hamid
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim took refuge at the Turkish embassy on Sunday due to fears he could be assassinated after fresh accusations of sodomy.
The developments come at a time of heightened political tension in Malaysia after the government's worst ever election result earlier this year put pressure on Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to quit.
Anwar, who was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998 and later jailed for sodomy and corruption, has seen a revival of his fortunes since the opposition alliance's strong showing in the March election. Anwar has said the old charges were trumped up, and said the new accusations were politically motivated.
"I was transported to the embassy earlier this morning fearing that my personal safety was in danger," Anwar said in a statement.
"I have been told that my assassination has not been ruled out as a means to subvert the people's will and bring an end to the transformational changes taking place in Malaysia," he said.
Anwar says he has won enough support from ruling coalition lawmakers to form a new government by September, which has sparked fears of policy shifts and unsettled investors.
Anwar has said he would alter oil-production sharing contracts, cut fuel prices, introduce minimum wages and redistribute oil wealth to the poor.
"With grumblings within the ruling coalition, most probably Abdullah's days are numbered," said political analyst Yahya Ismail. "So the government must find ways to cripple the opposition."
FRESH ALLEGATIONS
The new sodomy allegations arose on Sunday when Anwar's private assistant, identified by Anwar's party as 23-year-old Saiful Bukhari Azlan, lodged a police complaint.
Federal criminal investigation chief Bakri Zinin said the man who lodged the charges had been taken to hospital, but declined to give his name.
A statement from Anwar dismissed the charge as "complete fabrication".
About 100 of his supporters gathered outside the Turkish embassy, watched by a handful of riot police. They chanted "Reformasi", the movement's battle cry, and "down with the oppressive government".
Police have warned Anwar's supporters against holding any public protests. His sacking in 1998 brought tens of thousands onto the streets.
"If you create havoc, we will deal with you," Bakri said.
Anwar accused the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition of trying to ruin him, and his wife said she had photographic evidence showing the complainant was linked to an aide of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak.
"This is the second political conspiracy," Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told reporters. "It's a political murder against my husband."
Abdullah dismissed Anwar's claims. "Barisan Nasional has no intention of wanting to make life difficult for him or to harass him," the prime minister told reporters in the administrative capital of Putrajaya after launching an environmental project. "There is no such intention."
A spokesman for Najib declined to comment because of the ongoing investigations.
Barisan suffered its worst electoral setback in 50 years in March when it lost its two-thirds parliamentary majority and ceded five states to the opposition.
Public anger against rising prices and the ruling coalition's dismal showing in the poll have fuelled calls for a change in leadership.
The opposition alliance needs just 30 more seats to win a simple majority and form a new government. It won a record 82 seats in the 222-seat lower house of parliament in March.

Asian Currencies Post Weekly Decline on Stock Sales, Record Oil
By Aaron Pan and Lilian Karunungan
June 28 (Bloomberg) -- Asian currencies, led by South Korea's won, declined this week as overseas investors increased sales of local shares following the biggest loss in U.S. stocks in almost three weeks.
The won slumped 5.5 percent this quarter, the most since the period ended December 2000, on concern that record oil prices will slow the nation's economic growth. The MSCI Asia Pacific index of equities fell, with the benchmark heading for its worst first half since 1992. Thailand's baht dropped for a fifth week.
``There's a big tumble in stocks out there, sapping appetite for the won,'' said Jay Won, a currency dealer at Korea Exchange Bank in Seoul. ``Month-end export deals and the government's intervention may put some brake on the loss.''
The won fell 1.3 percent this week to 1,041.80 against the dollar in Seoul, according to Seoul Money Brokerage Services Ltd. The currency has declined 11.3 percent this year, the second- worst performance among the 10 most-active currencies in Asia outside Japan.
Overseas funds sold more Korean shares than they bought every day this month except for two, according to data from Korea Exchange. The nation's Kospi index of equities declined 1.9 percent, logging a fourth weekly loss. Investors dumped Thai stocks on all but two days this month through yesterday.
Thailand's baht lost 0.7 percent to 33.58 a dollar this week, Vietnam's dong fell 1.4 percent to 16,843 and Taiwan's dollar was little changed at NT$30.388. Singapore's dollar added 0.1 percent this week to S$1.3632.
`Blessing in Disguise'
Record oil prices are ``a blessing in disguise'' for Asian economies and currencies as high transport costs will coerce the region to become less reliant on exports and more on local demand, Morgan Stanley said.
Surging oil prices that are raising Asian exporters' costs to ship everything from cars to clothes to the West will encourage them to rely on domestic customers and this will help reduce global imbalances, Stephen Jen, chief currency strategist at Morgan Stanley in London, wrote in a report on June 26.
Malaysia's ringgit fell on concern that crude oil prices will spur inflation, slow growth and prompt investors to sell assets in the region.
The currency headed for its first quarterly loss since the period ended September 2006 after oil rose to a record. Malaysia raised fuel prices on June 5, the seventh increase in four years, to trim its subsidies and ease some pressure on the budget deficit.
Ringgit Suffers
``Oil news and the inflation theme have been causing the biggest impact on the ringgit,'' said Awaluddin Shariff, a currency trader at EON Bank Bhd. in Kuala Lumpur. ``It's been a poor quarter and people have probably closed their positions for the month by now.''
The ringgit traded at 3.2625 per dollar yesterday, versus 3.2560 a week ago, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The Philippine peso posted a weekly loss, dropping to the lowest level in almost nine months, after crude oil rallied to an all-time high this week. The commodity's prices in New York have more than doubled in the past year.
The Philippine trade deficit may widen to $11.5 billion this year, from $8.6 billion in 2007, due to rising oil and rice prices, central bank Director Iluminada Sicat said on June 26. click here for more: Asian Currencies Post Weekly Decline on Stock Sales, Record Oil Bloomberg - 6 hours ago

Potent mix of record oil price, inflation and politics
A comment by Joseph Chin
All parties must work together to help nation face challenges
THE surge in oil prices, rising inflation and political uncertainty, all cropping up at the same time, make for a potent mix, which has to be brought under control as the fire is being stoked further by the fallout from US subprime mortgage crisis.
Malaysia is going through a baptism of fire.
Just as the gold ore has to go through fire to come out pure, this is perhaps the crucial test for the Government, opposition parties and the people to set aside their differences and come together for the betterment of the economy and country.
When the Economic Planning Unit prepared the Mid-Term Review of the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP), oil was trading at US$100 per barrel. Since then, it is on an upward trend with the fresh record high at US$141 per barrel yesterday.
The oil price surge has widespread effect; ranging from higher transport costs to more expensive foodstuff, with no signs of abating.
This in turn is causing more inflationary pressure on all strata of society, especially poor families, which saw the consumer price index (CPI) for May hitting a 22-month high of 3.8% year-on-year.
The CPI is expected to surge by 7.5% to 8% year-on-year in June to December.
These developments are taking place during uncertain times in the political arena. Questions over the leadership transition from now until December are also a major concern.
We are also affected by the credit crisis, sparked by US mortgage defaults, which caused almost US$400bil in write-downs at the world’s largest banks and securities firms in the past year.
Under the Mid-Term Review of the 9MP, the Government has increased the development expenditure by RM30bil to RM230bil for the rest of the period ending in 2010.
With the scarce resources, the plan will now focus on people-centred social infrastructure projects instead of major infrastructure projects.
Most importantly, the projects must be executed well to ensure maximum impact on all the needy people.
There must be more transparency in the awarding of projects and also accountability in the execution of contracts. Leakages must be plugged.
The authorities must make periodic checks to ensure the projects are on track, the quality of materials used is up to mark and contractors paid on time.
There must be a fear of God in the hearts and minds of those who award the contract and also those undertaking the contracts that they will be held accountable. ... the star online Saturday June 28, 2008

Malaysia's Mahathir denies accusations of indoctrination camp for judges, civil servants
The Associated Press
Published: June 26, 2008
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad denied Thursday that he sent judges and other civil servants to a camp to indoctrinate them with government propaganda.
High Court Judge Ian Chin claimed earlier this month that Mahathir had threatened judges and sent them to so-called boot camps to make sure they acted in the government's favor.
The accusations were a fresh blow to the country's judiciary, already tainted with allegations that judicial appointments were brokered by a senior lawyer with top connections during Mahathir's tenure, which ended in 2003.
"The boot camp was not a boot camp at all. It was a ... course which had been attended by thousands of civil servants, business executives and politicians without any complaints," Mahathir said.
He slammed Chin, alleging the judge had made the accusations to cover up his own wrongdoing and get in the good books of the current administration.
Mahathir is at loggerheads with Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's government, accusing it of corruption, inefficiency and weakness. He has demanded Abdullah's resignation.
Chin "tries to divert attention to me, knowing of course that I'm not the favorite of the present government, that anyone who says anything against me would become very popular with the government," Mahathir said.
Chin was not immediately available for comment.
Mahathir, who resigned as prime minister after 22 years in power, has repeatedly rejected accusations that he influenced judges' decisions and appointments, saying he would be willing to testify in court.
A panel set up by the government to probe possible judicial corruption said last month it believed that prominent judicial and government figures — including Mahathir — may have been involved in a conspiracy several years ago to manipulate the appointment of top judges.

Dr M: Probe Justice Chin's alleged misconduct
By MANJIT KAUR
KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called on the Government to set up a tribunal to investigate High Court Judge Datuk Ian Chin for alleged misconduct.
He said the allegation should be taken seriously, claiming he had received documents, including a police report lodged against Justice Chin breaching the Judge’s Code of Ethics, that have also been sent out to several judges, the Chief Justice and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
“So why are they ignoring the fact? When PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim brought up the case against lawyer V.K. Lingam, a royal commission was set up immediately.
“It's up to the tribunal to decide whether the complaint against Justice Chin is true or otherwise, but what's important now is to set up the tribunal,” he said told reporters at his office at the Petronas Twin Towers here Thursday.
He said that on June 10, The Borneo Post had reported Justice Chin’s judicial disclosure about how Dr Mahathir had allegedly threatened judges and sent them to boot camps.
“What he did not reveal was that there a police report against him for breaching the code of ethics when hearing a case in which he had a personal interest.
“Justice Chin presided on a case involving businessman Datuk Syed Kechik Syed Mohamad without revealing that he believed Syed Kechik was responsible for getting his father and brother arrested 20 years ago.
“With Justice Chin joining Parti Berjaya where one of its objectives was to expel Syed Kechik, this should have resulted in him excusing himself from hearing the case,” he said.
Dr Mahathir touched on Justice Chin changing his initial accusation of “veiled threat” and claiming that, “I (Dr Mahathir) did not speak about removing judges through a tribunal but conveyed the threat by dropping words to that effect here and there.”
“I am wondering what the words were," he added. ... the star online

Malaysia raises development spending
Associated Press
By EILEEN NG 06.26.08, 7:05 AM ET
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -
Malaysia announced plans Thursday to spend $9.4 billion more on development projects including rural growth, public transport and food production in a bid to reach an average 6 percent annual economic expansion until 2010.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told Parliament that overall government spending under a five-year development plan through 2010 will increase 15 percent to 230 billion ringgit ($72 billion) to meet rising project costs, boost growth and improve food security.
The move follows a midterm assessment of the Ninth Malaysia Plan, which is part of a series of five-year plans to make Malaysia a developed nation by 2020.
Abdullah warned rising food and fuel costs, as well as the global financial turbulence could derail Malaysia's growth if no action was taken. The government earlier this month cut fuel subsidies, which sparked angry protests and intensified calls for Abdullah to step down.
"Rising oil prices and uncertainty caused by external factors makes it difficult for any nation to fully shield its citizens from hardship. The government remains committed to do everything within its power to lighten the burden of the people and preserve their quality of life," Abdullah said.
"Priority will be given to people-centric projects which provide basic amenities and impart direct benefit to the people."
Following the shift in priority, the government has deferred a slew of projects including a proposed 2 billion ringgit ($625 million) monorail and 1.5 billion ringgit ($469 million) expressway in the northern Penang state, said Sulaiman Mahbub, director-general of the Economic Planning Unit (nyse: UNT - news - people ).
Out of the additional 30 billion ringgit, a third will be channeled to spur growth in five newly launched development corridors in rural areas while 10 percent will go to an incentive fund to woo investors, he told reporters earlier.
Another 10 percent will boost food production, while the rest will be used to build more rural roads, enhance urban transportation and rural education and boost the national broadband infrastructure, he said.
For the remaining period of the plan, gross domestic product is projected to grow an average 6 percent annually and inflation to rise to between 3 and 4 percent. Growth averaged 6.1 percent in the first two years of the plan.
Private investment is expected to expand 10.6 percent to reach an estimated 305.8 billion ringgit ($96 billion) between 2008 and 2010, Abdullah said. Hardcore poverty is expected to be eradicated and the government's fiscal deficit sustained at 3.2 percent of GDP by 2010, he added.
Economists said the growth forecast was too bullish. Inflation hit a 22-month high of 3.8 percent in May and is expected to climb further.
"The GDP forecast appears to be on the high side. Headwinds from external uncertainties and domestic risks due to the price hikes and inflationary pressure will weigh down the growth momentum," said Lee Heng Guie, economist with CIMB Securities.
He projected growth to ease from 5.3 percent this year to 5 percent in 2009 before rebounding to 5.8 percent in 2010.
Abdullah again defended the move to raise gasoline pump price by 41 percent, saying it will give the government greater flexibility to navigate the risks of a global recession.
By raising the price, Abdullah has taken a big political risk after leading his ruling coalition to its worst results ever in the March 8 general elections.
Abdullah promised to give greater emphasis to boost Malay corporate ownership from 19.4 percent now, to between 20 and 25 percent in 2010. The aim is to raise it to 30 percent by 2020 as part of an affirmative action program for the majority Malays, which is sore point with the minority Chinese and Indians.
Critics say the current figure is statistically understated because it doesn't include Malay-led government-linked corporations and is calculated based on the company's par value, not market value

Abdullah denies getting report on Altantuya case
Wednesday June 25, 2008 KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has refuted an allegation that he had received a written report from military intelligence over the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu.
“Of course I am concerned (over the allegation by Malaysia Today blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin). What Raja Petra did is unacceptable ... because what he stated is incorrect.
“It is stated (in Raja Petra’s statutory declaration) that I received a report from the military intelligence. That is not correct,” he said yesterday.
Abdullah said this when asked to comment on the statutory declaration made by Raja Petra on June 18 in which he stated, among others, that Abdullah had received a written report from military intelligence on Altantuya's murder. – Bernama

Former M'sian steel tycoon Eric Chia dies at 74: report
KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA'S former steel tycoon Eric Chia, a close associate of ex-premier Mahathir Mohamad and who was acquitted on charges of embezzlement has died aged 74, according to a report on Tuesday.
Chia, who was managing director of the government-owned steel company Perwaja, died at about 0100 GMT (5pm Singapore time) in a city hospital after suffering breathing difficulties, the Star daily reported on its website.
The tycoon made headlines in 1994 when he was charged with criminal breach of trust for misappropriating 76.4 million ringgit (S$32 million) and Perwaja almost collapsed under debts exceeding three billion dollars.
The wheelchair-bound Chia, upon his acquittal last year, said his vindication had come too late, the Star reported.
Chia said he had lost his family and was estranged from his son and daughter because of the shame, the report said.
Dr Mahathir could not be reached for comment.
Perwaja was one of several massive industrial projects initiated by Dr Mahathir in the 1990s to turn Malaysia into a regional high-tech manufacturing, financial and telecommunications hub.
The projects also included national car company Proton and the Astro satellite television service. -- AFP Click here: Former M'sian steel tycoon Eric Chia dies at 74: reportStraits Times, Singapore

Hindraf steps up attack on Mahathir
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's long-serving ruler Mahathir Mohamad destroyed the future of the Indian community by ignoring their welfare, a group claiming to speak for ethnic Indians has said.
Mahathir was "responsible for the plight of Indians in Malaysia", Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) national coordinator R Thanenthiran told the Tamil newspaper Makkal Osai.
He told the media that Hindraf would not have been formed if equal opportunities had been given to ethnic Indians, The Star newspaper quoted him as saying.
Hindraf has been attacking Mahathir after the latter posted on his blog, chedet.com, comments last week that claimed that the indigenous Malays were victims of the political arrangement post-independence when they had to accommodate ethnic minorities with full rights and privileges.
Hindraf has been highlighting perceived discrimination in jobs and education of ethnic Indians, a bulk of them Tamil Hindus. Click here:
