Ku Li calls for EGM to examine weakness

KOTA BARU: The office of Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has confirmed that some 20,000 letters have been distributed to all Umno division heads in the country for an emergency general meeting (EGM).

A spokesman for the Kelantan Prince said the letters were either mailed and some faxed across to the division heads, proposing an EGM be held on May 11, the 62nd anniversary of Umno’s formation.

“The letter proposes that division heads hold their own EGMs at their level to identify weaknesses and make recommendations following the stunning defeat Barisan Nasional endured in the 12th general election,” he said.

The recommendations can be put forth on May 11 for the EGM, the spokesman said when contacted.

“Ku Li (Tengku Razaleigh) has no clout to call for an EGM. He is just a divisional head. It must be a collective effort by all divisional heads. There is no hidden agenda except to address Umno’s weaknesses.”

Not once did the letter mentioned about asking anyone to step down and it was done in the best interest of all Umno members, the spokesman said.

It is learnt that Tengku Razaleigh, 71, now the country’s longest serving parliamentarian, would call for a Gua Musang divisional EGM on Thursday to discuss Barisan’s losses in the election.
