Umno divisional meetings: Tears as incumbent loses

Tasek Gelugor Umno division incumbent chief Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar openly shed tears yesterday after being dethroned of the post he had held for the last 23 years. The seemingly grief-stricken former deputy minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries had to be consoled by his supporters as news got around the Sungai Dua Dewan Besar, the division's meeting venue, that he had lost.

He lost by 88 votes to Permatang Berangan assemblyman Shahbudin Yahaya's 253 count.

Having composed himself much later, Shariff said: "I accept the result and the decision made by the members."
