Pas has named its Wakaf Mempelam state assemblyman Mohd Abdul Wahid Endut as the candidate for the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election.
Abdul Wahid, 52, who has been the Wakaf Mempelam state assemblyman for the past five terms had the experience which would enable him to get the votes needed to win the by-election.
"We have gone through a rigorous selection process and we are confident that our candidate met all the qualities that the people wanted," Abdul Hadi told a large crowd at the State Stadium tonight.
Abdul Wahid's nomination came as a surprise to many as it was widely speculated that the Pas candidate would be a toss between the party's state commissioner Datuk Mustafa Ali, Wan Abdul Mutalib and Batu Buruk state assemblyman Dr Syed Azman Syed Ahmad Nawawi .
Meanwhile, Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh said it does not matter who he was up against in the by-election.
"The BN is serious about winning. The party has an excellent track record and this will help win the people's confidence. Moreover, the BN has a head start in the campaign and we have managed to overcome problems.
"This week we will be getting more support from the BN machinery from other states. We will further strengthen our position," he added.
The number of voters in the con stituency is 80,229. Out of the num ber 79,194 are ordinary voters while 1,035 are postal voters.
